Hi,

So I booked 2 tickets for Rio on American Airlines and have quite a few BA miles I would like to use to upgrade the tickets to business class. If reward seats are still available on those flights is this something that is possible to do.

Thanks in advance

Thanks in advanceNo, sorry. If you want to use your miles for simple awards in business class, then yes, assuming availability.

Long answer is, upgrades using points are only available using points of the operating carrier. So AA points only on AA flights.

No, sorry. If you want to use your miles for simple awards in business class, then yes, assuming availability. Depends on where the flights are from. If from the US, then that's ok, if flying from LHR (quite a reasonable assumption, considering this is the BA board) then AA is not an option for redemption flights TATL (unless the flight goes to Mexico or Canada.)

BA has a 80K business class award for travel between N. America and S. America on AA and/or LAN, and permits stopovers both going and coming. In addition, unlike its trans-Atlantic awards, this award attracts minimal taxes/fees and no fuel surcharges. Worth looking into for your next trip.

I believe Asiamiles allows upgrades on BA and AA using Asiamiles

I believe Asiamiles allows upgrades on BA and AA using AsiamilesYes but AFAIK only on very high fare buckets, e.g. Y/B. Check the rules.
