My husband and I are traveling with another couple to London from Orlando next June on Virgin (economy seating). I noticed that there are 3 rows of "2 seat" configuration in the back of the plane on each side. Would these be better than sitting in the middle where the 4 of us would sit together. I have never flown in the back of a plane before, but really don't fly much. Thanks for your help!

These are popular seats because they are in pairs and have a little more room - however, they may be in the extra leg room category which costs a little extra and can't be requested online. I'd check with VS first.
The downside, is that you're at the back and it's a long way to immigration behind 400+ people!

I try to choose these seats when flying with my son LGW-MCO. Usually 61A,C. I have had no trouble pre-selecting these without paying extra. You do seem to feel turbulence a bit more in the back than when you sit in the middle, and there is a little extra space between 61A and the window, so you have room to put items during flight. All in all, a decent place to sit in economy, IMO.:)

I thought it's all depends on how close your friendship are, with that couple. :)
Here you can see what seatgury has to say about them.

(Im just guessing that its a 747, if not switch plane to the one you want).

It will be either one of two configurations:

They only differ in a few places. In both configs, there are four rows (61-64) of paired seats on either side in the back. However, only one of the configs, like previously stated, seats 62ACHK and 63ACHK are extra legroom seats which sell at USD50 each (or GBP30 if departing form the UK) and can not be preassigned.
Now, we don't know which of the two configs you will be getting until the day prior to your flight, so you will never be able to preassign these seats, since we don't know if they will be the extra leg room seats or not.
My recommendation is call reservations and ask them to put a request in your booking for those specific seats in the back (if possible of course). That way when the person who does the seating for your flight looks through all the requests, they will be able to know where you want to sit. Please understand that it is only a request and are not guaranteed.
I really like this configuration myself. If I have to fly in Y then I like to pick the window seat in one of these pairs. I didn't realise VS were charging for this now and I'm not sure I'd stump up $50 for one.
