I also am wondering about the bulk-head seats 1AB ( or KL).

Are they as coveted as the BA First 747 bulk head seats?

We may be flying out of SFO (no award seats from our hometown SEA ) and I am trying to decide between leaving from SFO ( 744) or LAX. ( 777)

Thanks.

Yeah, the AF 747 to SFO is two class only. For first class you'll have to go LAX and get the 772 or 773.

While 1A/B/K/L are all fine they feel a bit cramped, the window seats sort of make up for it but I wouldn't recommend the B and K seats.

They're no where near as good as 1A/K in BA first on the 744.

KLM are currently using a 744 on the AMS-SFO route and I would highly recommend the upper deck, especially row 77, on that over the air france offering. While the service is a bit worse on KL than on AF the upper deck on the 747 makes all the difference. At least in my book.

There are a few other threads on seating in the 747 ... but I would not recommend Row 1, you are in tip of the nose of the plane, it's slightly curved and less room than other rows. You are closer to your neighbors across the aisle and are in front of the coat closet.

Go for Rows 2 or 3; the aisle is quite wide and it feels much more spacious (there is a center table-like structure where they place magazines and papers, used to place champagne!).

Another opinion from experience: it's nicer to fly out of SFO than LAX on AF.

The AF 747 is my favorite plane for Business class if you are in the front cabin (Rows 1-4) and I prefer it to the 777 or the A340/330 as it still seems the most spacious.

Thanks for the replies.

I am using AS Miles for an award ticket... planning very far out in advance.

Everything was going well in my pre-planning...enough award seats from SEA to go outbound on or close to my day next autumn...all of a sudden nearly ALL the BIZ class award seats dried up.... everything was 0'ed out and we are talking 355 days in advance... where normally 3-4 seats on the SEA-CDG were open everyday if you acted quickly enough when they first became available.

My first thought was the canceled the flight from their schedule it was that drastic of a change..... but no.

So now I am having to look at alternative departure cities....

Seems a bit odd, unless AF/KL are limiting the award seats for partners. I've had a 100% success rate getting award seats in biz or first on the CDG/AMS-SFO and CDG/AMS-LAX routes as close as the day before departure.

I would check with AF directly and see if they have award seats open for the dates you're interested in, and if so confront AS about it.

Someone posted on the NW board a couple of weeks ago about the sudden disappearance of AF biz-class awards, so there may be something to it. I just came back from a trip to Paris using NW miles (LAX-DTW on NW in coach, DTW-CDG on AF in bIz, return CDG-IAH on AF in coach, IAH-LAX on CO in coach). Despite haunting nwa.com and expertflyer, I was never able to find a nonstop award in either direction, even on the mornings of departure. In my case it could be because of Fashion Week, but maybe AF biz awards are drying up.
