Amtrak Guest Rewards - Viewliners on the Silver Meteor

Hi all.

I took the Silver Star southbound last year and had a Bedroom-A. There was no arm chair in the room, the type that folds off the wall or the free standing type. This was very annoying because it was not possible for 2 people to sit by the window.

Does anyone know if there is some type of arm chair in all Viewliner Bedrooms now? Or only some of the cars? I'll be taking the Silver Meteor soon in a Bedroom-A and can't figure out if there is an arm chair.

Were you, by chance, in an Accessible Bedroom? I just looked at the little graphic on the Amtrak website and it doesn't look like there's the chair in there (I know that there was fold out chair in our bedroom back in August).

All trains originally had a free standing folding chair in the Bedrooms, this was true of both Superliner (double decker) cars and the single level Viewliner cars. Free standing chairs are considered a safety hazard by the Federal Railroad Administration and therefore are being eliminated in favor of the new type that is mounted to the wall, but still folds up when needed.

I'm not sure just how many cars have received the new style fold-up chair, but I believe that overall about 70% to 80% of both types of sleeping cars have received the new chairs. I think that in the meantime, the deadline for removing the old chairs has passed, and therefore Amtrak has removed all of them even on cars where the new style has yet to be installed.

You have a decent chance that you'll get a room with the new mounted chair, but there is no guarantee. You could still hit one of the cars that has yet to be fitted with the new chair. Unfortunately in that case, you'll have no choice but to use the couch.

I believe that all the cars should be done by this time next year, but please don't quote me on that.
