I believe there are fees/cost to maintain such accounts, such as monthly charge, min balance...etc. You also have to keep the account open for certain period of time (maybe 180 days?) in order to get the freebie bonuses, let it be gifts, miles, or cash. 797-3 Oct 4, 09, 1:02 am There is a minimum period. It may be 90 or 180 days. It is not a year. I got a GPS (Garmin Nuvi 760 or 7-something). However, I bought some stocks and did not withdraw the money. If it's 180 days and you put in 10,000, then you will be forfeiting about $50 of interest compared to putting it in a CD. So the gift is not free. However, if you are buying stocks, then it is a bonus. pgary Oct 7, 09, 4:02 pm I and others have had success in proposing to Ameritrade that I receive miles or Starpoints for the deposit instead of the gift. Ask. MisterNice Oct 8, 09, 9:05 am I did not get this offer but I got other offers. One was for a free Bluray player and a year of free three dvd at a time. netflix for a nice deal. I took it as it was worth about $400 and it had no lockup time. I use them as my normal trading account as they have no minimum fee, no monthly fee and very nice low fees for stock trading. You can put your money in one of their CD or in their money market paying a minimal interest. MisterNice Bratwurst und Bier Oct 16, 09, 4:07 pm For the larger deposit awards, there is a minimum time the money has to be in the account.
