Trousers for KLM stewardesses

Thursday 01 October 2009

Women working as stewardesses and ground crew for airline KLM will be able to wear trousers from next April.

Trousers have been added to the standard uniform on the request of 'many' of the company's 11,000 female staff, the Telegraaf said on Thursday.

Dutch designer Mart Visser is working on the new uniforms, which also include a proper women's suit for female pilots. Until now, they have had to wear adapted male uniforms.

The current uniform dates from 1990.

One can only imagine: these are going to be some BIG trousers.

KLM may be dead, but I see that sexism is alive and well.

I assume you mean that sexism of KLM the company is not dead, since until now women have been required to wear dresses, I agree with you.

In case you think I am making some sexy kind of comment, I refer you to the facts:

Going Dutch: History of the tallest people
AP 18 September 2006, 08:13pm IST
AMSTERDAM: Most of us are taller than our parents, who probably are taller than theirs. But in the Netherlands, the generational progression has reached new heights. In the last 150 years, the Dutch have become the tallest people on Earth and experts say they're still getting bigger. It is a tale of a nation's health and wealth.

Big trousers indeed.

"Big" trousers are not the same thing as long trousers...

...just as a "big" person is not (necessarily) a tall person.

Well I do know that he or she who is wearing the trousers is not necessarily the one who is really wearing the trousers.

First you make a veiled accusation of sexism and now you are correcting my English? :)

You live in the Netherlands and you don't think that Dutch women have some of the longest legs in the world requiring some mighty BIG trousers?

Maybe as an alternative KLM could also issue some extra high boots to the stewardesses so they fit in with the Dutch street scene? :D

Whether trousered or not, KL FAs will no longer be wearing name pins, allegedly for "security and privacy" reasons.

So, if the female FAs get the choice of trousers or skirts, shouldn't the blokes also have a choice?

At least, on flights to GLA/EDI/ABZ, kilts* may go down (or up ) well!

-- Henry

* Actually, what most folks call a kilt should actually be called a skirt - the true kilt is a much bigger, full-body vestement.

If not intended to be a sexist joke, what is the point of this post?

I think the point is pointless.
:D

But I saw some ladies wearing the trousers as a trial run (on board and at the airport) and they looked really smart.
However, the ones I witnessed were of the "petite" kind, trousers may not look great on everyone, but then again the same goes for skirts.
I quite like the new uniform although it's still very very blue...

Maybe a veiled share tip in The Big Blue Polyester Trouser Company bv

Perhaps some of us are taking this a little too seriously?

Let's please keep the discussion to the wearing of the trousers and not go picking fights over their respective length or girth or real or imagined slights about Dutch waists and/or inseams, etc.

I don't get it.

Don't crews have to wear thier security ID (with picture) at least until they have boarded the flight-I've never looked close enough but would imagine that this would show thier name.

And doesn't the Captain/Pursor still introduce themselves and the crew when making the welcome aboard announcement.

When checking in at JNB/CPT they used to give each passenger a letter with various information relating to the flight as well as the names of the senior crew on the flight-I thought this was a nice touch.

Seems strange.

Maybe it is for pax not to look at their breasts where the name badge would be located.
