Hertz now charging for No-Shows? I recently reserved a car and plans changed, forgot to cancel reservation and now have a charge on my credit card. Had Hertz email me receipt and the station even went as far as showing a pick up and drop off time, with a fuel charge. Amazing!! Sent info in to Hertz home office, but what a @^%#!{{{ damn hassle...............

So you made a reservation and didn't bother to contact hertz to let them know you wouldn't be picking up the vehicle. I'm not suprised you had to pay a no show charge, if you had cancelled you reservation they could have rented that car to someone else.

A specialty vehicle reservation perhaps? Luxury, convertible... Or was this just for the normal midsize at an airport location? That would be unwelcome - and maybe new.

Was it a prepaid rate?

I think they should actually charge for no shows just like hotels and airlines. It would put an end to this double and triple bookings people do driving the cost up (by pushing the availability down) for the rest of us.

Completely agree. I love the idea of no-show charges, and wish they were implemented on all rentals.

Avis now do this as well, car rental companies are starting to do waht airlines and hotels have been doing for years

What exactly was the charge? If they disclosed a no-show charge to you at booking time, then you don't have much room to argue. But it sounds like maybe someone is pulling a fast one - there definitely shouldn't be a fuel charge on a no-show.

Is it possible that somehow someone picked up your car by mistake and somehow got past security with it? Seems unlikely, but I have had one or two cases over the course of 15 years of renting where I've returned a car only to hear "This isn't your car." (When that's happened, I've made sure to resolve it right there.)

I thought Hertz tried to implement a $2.50 or $5 no-show fee a couple years ago but it didn't stick and they backed off when Avis and National didn't follow. If a no-show fee somehow helps their systems run more efficiently by eliminating double/triple bookings, I'm all for it. It's kind of a Catch-22: the only places I have personally double-booked are places where Hertz has demonstrated repeatedly that they cannot manage their #1 Club Gold process. So if I'm not going to double-book anymore, I have to know 100% that if I'm on time, Hertz is on time and has my car ready. Otherwise, the no-show fee will just cause me to stop renting from them altogether.

By the way, here's the exact wording from the Hertz site regarding "Guaranteed Reservations."

Hertz sometimes accepts “guaranteed reservations” for non-prepaid rental transactions. Guaranteed reservations generally involve vehicles Hertz classifies as “Special Equipment” (such as premium and luxury cars, sports utility vehicles and mini-vans). A guaranteed reservation is not the same as a prepaid rental, because you are not required to prepay all or a substantial portion of the overall cost of the rental when you make a guaranteed reservation.

When you make a guaranteed reservation, you will be told of a fee (a “No-show Fee”) for which you will, under certain circumstances, be liable and will be required to provide Hertz with details of the debit, credit or charge card to be charged if the No-show Fee is incurred.

So...to the OP...was this a specialty car for which you were originally quoted a no-show fee? If it wasn't, it sounds like either a process failure or fraud.

In other words, the language above seems to make it clear that our routine standard-car reservations do not have some sort of new No-Show Fee...

Exactly. I was not told of of a no-show charge. If that was the rule, and I elected not to show up or call and cancel, fine-charge me, but seems illegal to not tell me this rule till later after the fact and then charge me. If they want to make this a rule, then they need to announce it. I think they are just doing it, hoping no one checks their CC statements closely. When you travel 3-5 days a week, it's easy to not catch it. I do take the time though every month to do a check and balance, and this is how I caught it.
I hate HERTZ, and only initially reserved this rental, cause Avis was sold out. Next time I will just cab it.
