Other Asian, Australian and South Pacific Frequent Flyer Programs - KUL-Cathay to Air Asia Transfer-Need Advice

I will be doing a connection in KUL from Cathay to Air Asia. I understand these are in different terminals and I must do a ground transfer. Can anyone with direct experience please advise the correct way to do this (bus, taxi, etc.) and the cost? I presume I need to change currency to the local currency if I have to pay for a taxi? I have approx. 4 hours from the scheduled landing of the Cathay flight to the scheduled departure of the Air Asia flight. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Air Asia operates from the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) which is on the opposite side of the airport from the main KLIA terminal. Four hours should be fine, but don't hang around because the journey between the two is quite long - around 20 minutes by bus, plus waiting time.

I've only used the bus myself, so I can't comment about the taxi price, but the bus operates every 30 minutes and costs a mere 1.50 Ringgit. Air Asia has a fairly strictly enforced (IME) check in deadline, so get across to the LCCT as soon as you can, and then you can relax.

I'm sure someone (who is not a cheapskate like me..) will post the taxi fare soon, and yes, you will need Malalysian Ringgit for bus or taxi.

No need to take a taxi, there are frequent shuttle buses between the main terminal (where Cathay lands) and the LCC Terminal (used by Air Asia), just follow signs for Bus Terminal/LCCT. The cost is RM 1.50 (~US$0.40) and yes, you need to pay in local currency, so bring some small bills (USD is good) and exchange them before you board the bus.

Taxi fare (before the recent fare increase) was MYR38, so I assume the current rate is around MYR40-45. It works by the coupon system and you are able to pay by credit card.

I took a taxi from KLIA to the LCCT on 5th Sep and the coupon was MYR 41.80 (I think.. Maybe +/- a ringitt).

The bloody thing was a claptrap and we had to do an enormous circle back towards KL city, then down to the sepang race track and finally up past the training centre and the cargo sheds and to the LCCT. Journey time was easily 20minutes +

On my return 13th Sep took the bus instead which went round an internal perimeter road, round the end of the runway and reached the other terminal in around half the time the taxi took.

Not sure if there is a reason they take different routes other than as an excuse for the taxi to charge more. I watched our route on the bus and we didnt seem to be on one way streets anywhere...

My 2 cents. Take the bus....

I have another related question if I may. :)

My MH flight gets in at 5:45am and I'd like to get a 8:25am AA flight. What are my odds like if I checked in online prior and got a cab straight to the LCCT?

If no delay on your MH flight I'd say you'll have no problems.

Just a word of warning. Checked bags can take a very long time to appear on the carousel at the main terminal at KUL even if the airport does not look very crowded.

Not quite true anymore, especially if your gate is at the main terminal (I know CX uses the satellite) and you have a priority tag. Twice this month, my luggage got there before I did (and I only did a quick toilet stop)

Thank you all for your advice. Just made the transfer from KUL to the LCCT terminal via bus. It certainly was much easier knowing in advance what was involved. I now believe that a minimum of 3 hours is required for this given the long lines to check in with Air Asia in the LCCT terminal. Quite a contrast having just come from Hong Kong airport on CX.
