Welcome to FT!
VOD is only available on 2 777s - 4X-ECE, 4X-ECF
Unforutnatly as far as I know one cannot really know for sure which plane will fly on a specific date :-(
FYI most of my flights to LAX were NOT on these planes - Guess it was just bad luck.

Sometimes the flights are equipped with a device they call a Vidbox which is a portable personal video player with lots of movies, shows and music. Its free in business but you have to ask for it, IF they have it onboard. Again, no way to know in advance if they'll have it on your flight.

You can request it in advance on their website.
Last time I did it I was charged a small fee (around $10-$14).

Were you charged in economy or even in business?

Vidibox is free on business and first, but not available on all flights, you
should request in advance.

My flight to LA where 80% of the times with Shderot or Qiryat Shomne, which
are the 2 newest 777 with the VOD, I had around 10 flights on this route
this year.

I was charged in C, as I reserved the vidibox in advance and gave my credit card details online. I spoke with an ElAl rep who told me I needed to contact the company directly. I'll probably do it in the next few days.

Impressive! I have my first LAX flight ever in a couple of weeks, and I'm a little uneasy with the long duration.

I noticed that during June/July, LY5 was always operated with 4X-ECE/F on saturday night

Simply go onto the vidibox website and check if you can order one for your flight. If so, there is most likely no VOD. If not, there probably is.

You are not correct.
I've called them. As the accept reservations weeks before the flight (maybe 1 month or more) they do not know which flight will have the 777 with the VOD, so they load them up anyway. so this is not a way to know if your 777 flight with have VOD or not.

as for reservation: if flying Biz/1st it's free. you can either reserve on the website but choose the : "contact me" option rather than entering CC info.
i called in, and was handled by a nice person who got the reservation, and emailed me a confirmation.

Not correct is a definite statement. I think the situation here is not so black or white.

They do not load the Vidibox on flights that have the VOD:
http://www.elal.co.il/elal/english/allaboutyourflight/inflight/inflightentertainment/playermedia/en_vidibox250208

However they probably only know that not long before the flight. Therefore, they may offer it until such time as they become aware of the a/c type.

For my flight to NYC next week I cannot order a vidibox, hence I assume they already know what the a/c is.

I think they know the reg at least weeks before a flight
