Flying Alitalia with Skymiles Medallion Status
Equipment:777-200 with In-Flight Entertainment (IFE)

Checkin was smooth. The boarding passes did not show a skymiles number but the agent read the skymiles number off of her computer screen and confirmed status. She also said that regardless of my Delta status level I would not be upgraded for the international flight.

Boarding started over an hour before departure and "final boarding" was called over the public address system over 35 minutes before departure. The flight left about 10 minutes early.

The back of the plane was completely full but the front of the plane had about one person for every three seats.

Food was okay and wine was plentiful. Service was pretty good, when my neighbors woke up when the beverage cart arrived (and after the food cart passed) the flight attendants serving beverages proactively asked if they wanted a meal and went to the other cart to get them meals.

Given the plethora of availability in the front of the plane (and how packed it was in the back) I'm a bit disappointed they weren't more flexible with upgrades, but all-and-all I was pretty happy with the service.

I can only tell you that recently I got upgrades from AZ only for operational needs and not because of my status.
In their critical period (past December-March), instead, I got upgrades without asking.
All of these upgrades where in european connections.
