I prefer Pepsi (especially Pepsi Max) to Coke.
BUT
I would never drink cola with a meal of any kind. Its overbearing sweet taste desensitises your taste buds, ensuring that you miss the subtler touches of your food, and the heavy carbon content means that the meal gets digested expeditiously, meaning you end up overeating and/or going hungry sooner than you would otherwise. Champagne and sparkling water are the only carbonated drinks I would ever consider having with a meal.

Odd that someone who prefers Pepsi (150 calories per 12 oz. can) to Coke (140 calories per 12 oz. can) would complain about the "overbearing sweet taste" of colas of any kind. Coke is less sweet than Pepsi based on sweetener content.

I am not sure where you get your numbers, but, according to labelling information on the UK sites, full-sugar Pepsi and Coke have exactly the same calorific content- 42kcal per 100ml. If anything, Coke tastes sweeter to me.
Having said that, I have no problem with a sweet drink. No complaints about the overbearing sweet taste when you're having the drink on its own.
The problem is mixing a sweet drink with a meal, because then you lose the taste of the meal.

I did the Pepsi challenge once many years ago. Before the blind tasting test was asked which cola I preferred - I said Coke. Having taken the challenge, I chose Coke. Used to drink gallons of the stuff. Love it!
I gave up Coke about a year ago as colas are bad for your bones. I might have an occasional glass, but very rarely now.
Ginger Ale is nice with Asian and spicy food (I found this out in Canada) and my sugared drink of choice now is any commercial lemonade (7-Up, Sprite etc) with the juice of half a lime or lemon. I'm also fond of Orangina.

in the US, "soda" (originally "soda pop") is used primarily to refer to soft drinks, as opposed to "club soda" / "seltzer water" / "soda water"
when i did drink it, i really preferred pepsi. (although vanilla coke was interesting) when i drank a lot at home, it was always decaf. have never done "diet" anything, except occasionally food with splenda in it nowadays.

If I'm going for something fizzy and sweet, I'll have Irn Bru on occasion, but that's a couple of times a year. Liking Irn Bru is something that is genetically built in to all Scots :)
Alternatively, the fizzy Lipton Ice Tea ('koolzuurhoudend') that you only seem to get in the Netherlands (am willing and very happy to be corrected - just tell me where!) is rather nice.
Otherwise, personal preference is for Bottlegreen Elderflower Pressé, but mostly fruit juices (esp James White and Sainsburys TTD - who also do a fantastic Damson Pressé).

When drinking the full sugar content varieties - which is rare and a treat :p - I will happily consume Coke or Pepsi but I don't like all the crazy varieties, except cherry. Since I'm a diet drinker, in the can I definitely prefer diet coke, but for fountain drinks diet pepsi is much better esp. if you add a lemon or lime. Don't know why that is, but diet coke tastes weird to me from the fountain. Now a few places are offering coke zero at the fountain, and I do like that.
I absolutely cannot live without my Diet Mountain Dew though - I have one in the morning every day, as I can't stomach coffee until the afternoon. I know that's not really a coke/pepsi response, but I love my DMD!!

Pepsi, not Coke (tried the Pepsi Lime and actually liked that quite a bit). But when asked in a restaurant or airplane "Is Coke OK", the answer is "yes."
** Usually only drink half cans and love visiting the airline lounges in the U.K. and elsewhere in the old days since i could smuggle back home dozens of those smaller cans they have over there. But alas, those days are gone because while i can smuggle them on board being airside, i can't make it past another security line when transfering stateside.

Diet Pepsi, drinking one right now. But I am trying (and generally succeeding) to drink less of it. The main replacement is brewed iced tea. I have one of those silly coffee maker-like brewing machines in the kitchen here at the office, and while that was totally in the way at home, here it's a great idea.
I try to only drink one Diet Pepsi a day now, but there's a case in the fridge because of a meeting, so I've had two today. ;)
I don't much like Diet Coke, but I'll drink it in a pinch. I tried Coke Zero for the first time recently, not as bad as Diet Coke, but I still prefer Diet Pepsi over both. Diet Pepsi Max is interesting, but I generally stay away unless I really do need extra caffeine. Regulars (even ones made with all sugar rather than HFCS) are pretty hard to drink anymore. I have to be really desperate for the taste of cola....

You obviously haven't traveled extensively in the US. No one in the Upper Midwest uses the term "soda" to refer to a soft drink. Minnesotans uniformly use the term "pop" and are likely to give you club soda if you ask for a soda. On the other hand, MOST people on the East Coast are unfamiliar with the term "pop." The dividing line in the Midwest between "soda" and "pop" is around Indianapolis, north of which "pop" is used and south of which "soda" is used, but I am sure someone will find an exception.

It's not made up, but it is the subject of some contention. The theory is that the additional pressure caused by the CO2 ingested causes the stomach and intestine to distend slightly, allowing more rapid digestion. This would be observed more with colder carbonated drinks, as more of the CO2 remains dissolved when it's drunk.
Others refute this and claim that the distention is minimal, and that other properties of carbonated drinks (such as the relatively strong acidity of colas an the like) contribute to the effect more.
