It can happen: while MzCE & the kids were pillaging the 5am sales last year, I booked us a 'Black Saturday' run FNT-MSP-MCO-FNT, $155 in First, for 11,300 RDM. (2800mi + 50% + 20th Anniversary 5K + WPU 2000mi. & a National bonus.)
Sadly, we couldn't find a parking place at any mall around MCO. :( MzCE was sincerely bummed out.

Well, the 'teaching' is pretty-much contained in these forums ~ LOTS of reading, then following the stories & examples, and outright experimenting with the various tools & booking sites. Then read more ... See the 'stickie' posts at the top of the forum.
The NWA 20th Anniversary promo was a one-shot; maybe we'll see another in 2011.
The WPU102 (http://www.nwa.com/features/wpufly/) & WPU200 (http://www.nwa.com/features/ufly/) (WorldPerks University 2k-mi bonii) are still around ~ most folks grabbed the 100 free miles, but didn't fly within the bonus window. Haste makes waste.
The fare sites (DreamMaps, Watchdog, FareCompare, etc) hinted that there were some bargains to be had; I can only explain the cheapo fare as a fluke of the reservation system ~ it OFFERED the routing and seats out of the blue. It happens.
So .. do the homework & keep track of what nuggets might be of value to *you* .. then be prepared to jump when the wormhole opens.

I even saw Royal Caribbean was having a black Friday sale. So, maybe we'll see a sale from a few airlines.

Well, I can speak for Ricky and myself, the Black Friday deals we're hoping for would be akin to $43++ tix to the Mediterranean in C/J/D or $2+ to Watertown. ;)

Luck. It's happenned to me only twice (premium fares). Granted I'm not always "looking."
1) Last year my wife and I were looking for cheap coach tickets to some place sunny and warm in February. I found a terrfific deal to PUJ (Punta Cana). I was just messing around and decided to check business class fares for the trip; the r/t fare was $400 AI DFW/PUJ on AA. Included was a free stopover in MIA and the chance to ride in F on AA's 777 to MIA. I didn't have to do any deep searching... I just clicked on "Business" on the AA web site after I had found the coach prices. The fare was in the system for weeks.
2) A few weeks ago I found out that I needed to go to Denver on business. Coach fares were good... then I found a refundable first class fare of $235 AI on CO via IAH (from DFW).

IIRC, the BA $20 fares came out over Thanksgiving Day/ Black Friday a few years back. I missed the boat because I wasn't online Thanksgiving weekend. :-/
