Start from SMF and do the reverse of this http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=743328
Go to AirCanada.com and book a r/t to LHR
Try to find a deal to SJU from either SFO or SMF on UA

If you just want to get it over with, $1196 buys you SFO-SYD-AKL-SYD-SFO & gives you a weekend in SYD for your trouble. Oh yes, 17524 EQM. ITA shows availability out 11/6, rtn 11/11 in T bucket. Of course some purist MR's would freak at the 6.82 cents pm, but popping 1K and a little SYD pleasure seems worth it to me. But that's just me....

2x to SJU would put you over. Each r/t is about 7800 EQM and right now you can find fares for around $250.

Try the united business class deal to CDG. It's about $2200 AI for 17k EQM includes COS bonus. Also, same trip is $1k in coach only 11 K EQM though. Dates through December.

yikes i just looked at this on ua.com and each trip requires about 8 hours in Ted!
who would fly UA to SJU given that it requires a 4-5 hour hop on Ted (each way)?

I dunno, but in E+ the TED product is identical for me to the full UA. I usually snag an exit row. Of course, except the fact that TED won't give me the full can of soda, but they will serve a double drink if asked;). If the CPM was right and the dates fit, I would fly TED. So I have a zero OPUP possibility on TED, the EQM & RDM are the same. It's a MR afterall. But that's just me....

TED E+ is better than US Y though (which I'm fixing to do in a few weeks). CPM is around 3.5 though which makes it worth it IMHO.

The transcons are still upgradeable. And as mrswirl says, Ted beats flying on US any day of the week. What you could also try looking at is the flight that makes a stop in STT, since that's mainline, even if it only operates a couple of days a week.
