OK... so my wife and I were flying PHL-ALB in 2D and 2F the other day. We board and there's already someone sitting in 2D. My wife said "I think you're in our seat. Do you have 2D?" And she said "Oh, is this row 2? I'm sorry" and got up and moved to her seat in 1D.
Now, I could kind of understand it if she confused row 13 for row 14 or something, but don't you think you might pick up on the problem if you're supposed to be sitting in row 1 and after you sit down you realize that there's a whole row in front of you? Did she think that was row 0?
Not really a big deal, but I thought it was kind of amusing.

I overshoot seats all the time, and swap C to D and vice-versa. :D

hehe... yeah... I've done it too. I just thought it was kind of funny because she seemed to be rather surprised that she wasn't already sitting in row 1... I would have thought that would be pretty obvious givin the row of seats in front of her.

I saw something similar on the LGA-BOS shuttle recently. Guy got on and there was someone in his 2A seat. FA checked and the person sitting there had 12A - claimed the "1" was "hard to read"! Even showed the FA and tried to get her to agree. After escorting the squatter back to coach, the FA came back and shared a "NICE try!" with the rightful 2A holder.
I have a feeling that your situation was a similar "intentional mistake"

I am easily distracted... especially when I have to find a @&***& overheard storage bin... So that's why I sometimes overshoot. But I understand the idea of "row 1" :D

In Boston the machines are all mis-aligned and the "1" in the row number prints right on the line - there are constantly people in row 5, 6, 7 who should be in 15, 16, 17. However, I've never seen someone get into F who knew they were in coach....

A more convincing response would have been "Oh my goodness....I was looking at the boarding pass stub from my (fill in the blank) to PHL leg. Duh!!! So sorry!"

A ha! Interesting. If the big seats didn't do it, you'd think the pre-flight cocktail he got would have tipped him off!

I have had people knowingly sit in F twice!!
Once it was "Oh, but isn't this cabin pretty empty? why can't I sit here?" appeal to the FA, followed by, as she was led back to Y, "I too used to be a Frequent Flyer and used to travel a lot in F"
One other time (just last month) it was someone who methodically kept acting as if she were accidentally in someone else's seat (she was in mine when I came in, I was perhaps 10th or 15th on the plane that day) and kept saying "sorry" each time the rightful occupant showed up until F actually filled up!!!

I bet this person was of that special category of people (usually 5~10 of them are in any given flight) who seem to believe that seat numbers are posted at random in the plane. Even though they are in 27B, they will read, re-read, examine, and then reexamine every single row number all the way down to their row  (and sometimes continue examining a few after theirs!!). What I find interesting is that they don't even figure out that these numbers have some type of order to them even after they are done examining in detail the first 10 or 15 rows!!
Add to this the growing line behind them (i.e. the associated insensitivity to everyone behind them), and I instantly start questioning our dismal education system which doesn't teach these idiots neither how to count nor care for people around them!! :p
