Hi,

I'm travelling DUB-PHL next week and was thinking of the $500 TA GoUpgrade. There appears to be plenty of space up the front. Is it worth it?

Thanks,

Aidan

I upgraded once from Phl/SNN but it was on a 767. I think your plane will be a Boeing 757-200. I don't think I'd do it again on a 767, but I'm not familiar with the 757. Why don't you check it out on seatguru.com and see what you think? There are some warnings of which you might want to be made aware.

The TA 757-200s are equipped with the Envoy seats that were removed from A333s. The seat is much better than what is currently employed on the 767s.

A 757 is a tight ride across the pond seeing as it is a narrowbody aircraft. A ride up front in the newer Envoy seats would definitely help.

It is a pretty darn short flight from Ireland to the USA, but if you are staying awake and want a few good drinks along with a larger meal then go for it. Otherwise, on some of the review sites, USAirways does not get great trans-atlantic markings.

See the link below:

Enjoy your trip and let us know how it turns out and how the service was for you. Fly safe.

Flew in the front cabin last month and found it good. Nice seats, good service. Would recommend the additional $$ for the upgrade.

Since it's an all daylight flight, I don't know if I'd shell out the $500 for the upgrade. For the Westbound, however, it might be worth it.

This is more what I'm thinking. If the GoUpgrade changes the booking class, and therefore the bmi miles I'll earn, it's more in it's favour. Also what some of the others above have said about the seats and meals.

Of course, $500 goes along way with the coach alcohol service, even for an Irishman  (and to clarify, I might have one or two beers max, since I've to drive at the end of it all!)

What is the new class if any when you do a GoUpgrade?

Thanks for the advice,

Aidan

I seriously couldn't recommend Envoy to anyone. It is a substandard product and not worth the $500. Trust me. You'll thank me after leaving the aircraft with $500 more in your wallet.

...What is the new class if any when you do a GoUpgrade?...

It's "J" fare class for an Envoy upgrade with Miles or CP certs, so I assume that's the same fare class for GoUpgrades too... (I've never done GoUpgrades).

$500 is nothing to sneeze at, but with the rising Euro, isn't that less than a night's pub crawl in DUB? :)

When I flew GoEnvoy last week from CDG-PHL they charged me 400 Euros plus 40 Euros French tax. When I questioned it at check in I was told that it's $500.00 from the USA to CDG, but the charge is 400 Euros from Europe to the USA. So my credit card charge was $1190.00 plus 80 Euros (for 2 people) for the French tax.

I would recommend the upgrade. It is true that envoy is not as good as other business class service on other carriers. However, the price you are paying is significantly less with a Go envoy fare (versus prepaid business) and it is certainly better than coach. Some have said it is a short flight, yes by trans-atlantic means, but it is still five plus hours, which in my mind, makes it an easy decision.

Thanks to all for the comments and advice.

In the end I've decided against the GoUpgrade. $500 is going to go along way in Frys (or possibly Ritz Cameras) when I get there next week, and I have seat 7C at the moment, which is one of the recommended coach seats for the TA 757 according to this thread

Thanks again,
