My husband is 6'8" tall and has a real problem fitting in a "regular" seat. When I called US Air about our upcoming trip to STT booked with FF miles, I asked if there were any seats available with extra leg room for him.
I was told for $150 each we could upgrade to first class.....24 hours prior to departure. Is this true?? If so, is it for all 4 legs of our flights? It would be worth it to him. Sometimes he is able to get Exit row which is OK too but of course that isn't guaranteed. Thanks!

You can upgrade 30 hours before the flight if there are seats available. It doesn't matter that you are using an award ticket. The $150.00 is only for one way. My son is 6'7" and he has the same problem as your husband. Exit rows and bulkheads are helpful too.

GoFirst (http://www.usairways.com/awa/content/traveltools/intheair/envoyfirst/goupgrades.aspx) upgrade charges are based on flight distance (e.g. up to 500 miles is $50, then multiples of that up to a max of $250) based on availability by calling 30 hours before first flight time, or at the airport.
E.g. CLT-STT is around 1500 miles, and $150 for each GoFirst upgrade sounds about right...
It's important to note that the charge is per flight segment. So, if you're flying from PHL to SAN with a connection in LAS, you pay once for the PHL to LAS segment and again for the LAS to SAN segment. The rates are different because it's based on mileage between the city pairs. You pay again for the flights back.

So if we go IND to CLT and then CLT to STT, we will have to pay $300 each to upgrade or $150-Sorry but I'm a little confused. If it is $150 for each leg, then could we only do the upgrade for CLT-STT (the longest flight) for $150? Thanks for everyone's responses.

I was under the impression that the upgrade was for the whole one-way trip, but maybe I'm wrong. Here's the page that speaks to upgrades:

It doesn't really specify if the upgrade is based on segment or the whole thing, like IND-STT.
