I really need to be able to go carryon only for an upcoming trip FCO to CDG on an AF ticket but operated by AZ. I travel with a standard US wheelie bag. What are my chances of having it weighed or otherwise questioned?

The standard (22 inch) American rollaboard cabin luggage is generally deemed too large for carry-on by almost everyone else in the world. It is certainly hit or miss as to whether you will be challenged over it... I would say better than a 50% chance that you will not be permitted to bring it with you on the plane.

If I think there will be a problem with the weight of my carry on, then I use airport lockers or my car to temporarily stow heavy items until I get my boarding pass. I have never been challenged on weight at the gate, only at the check-in desk.

I do most of my Italian flying out of MXP, not FCO, but I have had the same experience as Kibison -- my baggage has been weighed at check in, never at the gate.
If you are flying FC, or if you are a SkyTeam elite member who can check in at the FC counter, you are almost certain to be excused from the weighing in.
Another good trick is to carry both your roll on and a smaller "personal item" such as a computer case. Put all your heavy things in the personal item -- they never ask to weigh it.

Yes, in Europe it's more the size than the weight. (BA for example has no weight limit at all; if you can lift it into the overhead locker, it's ok.) 22 x 18 x 10 inches but including the wheels and handles. If you measure a "22 inch" US rollaboard, you'll probably find it's more than 22 inches long overall.

Your idea has much merit.
No one questions your bag at security or the gate? "...use airport lockers "Seems like a logical alternative.
