A United Airlines flight destined for New York's LaGuardia airport Sunday might have to be diverted to JFK airport, with its final destination hinging on that evening's Los Angeles Dodgers-New York Mets game, the flight's pilot told passengers before takeoff.

Very interesting stuff... was anyone from the FT community on this flight? Additional info?

The pilot's explanation sounds plausible, but it's also plausible that he misunderstood the situation. Either way, doesn't sound like a big deal, and I'm sure the passengers on the flight were glad to land at the correct airport.

I don't think keeping an airport "open" for a baseball charter is a terribly egregious act, either. It wasn't the team's fault that the game was re-scheduled, and to have them shuttle their jet over to JFK earlier in the evening would have been a huge waste of time and money for everyone involved. Obviously I say this not as a resident of the areas surrounding LGA, but I can't imagine the occasional late-night departure is going to upset their world too dramatically.

And, ABC doesn't know the difference between UA and US (note the picture.) When will they get this stuff straight?

Since this seems highly specific to NY airport ops., esp., LGA's, please follow in our Travel->New York forum. Ocn Vw 1K, Moderator, TBuzz.

Not to hijack the thread, but if the Dodgers' charter home from LGA was nonstop, wouldn't that violate the 1500 mile LGA perimeter rule?

Unless of course the flight was on Saturday, or the rule doesn't apply to charters, or the flight made a stop within a 1500 mile radius (or at DEN)...
