I was given good tips on this site re rail trip ronkonkoma to woodside, then cab to LGA.

I've heard tho. that woodside is a maintenace stn. for r/r workers.

I'm confused as the LIRR schedule shows stops for Woodside and gives me the impression it is for usual travellers.

There is regularly scheduled LIRR train service to Woodside.

The Hillside Maintenance Facility stop is strictly for LIRR workers and is not the same as Woodside.

I'm fairly certain cabs will be available at the station as soon as you exit the train. Most LIRR stations have cabbies waiting when trains arrive. If not, there is usually a sticker for the local cab company on any pay phone at the station.

At Woodside it will generally be gypsy cabs waiting outside of the station. Yellow cabs will pass at times but not with any predictability.

If you get into a "gypsy cab" or other cab without a meter, make sure (1) it has "livery" or "TLC" license plates (so you know it's licensed to pick up passengers) and (2) that you agree on the fare before you start the trip to LGA.

Neither of those things should be a problem, but they'll help you avoid any potential problems.
