According to Taloussanomat (Finnish business newspaper) there are 590.000 active AY Plus members (members who have used Finnair's services during the past 18 months). In 2006 Finnair gave 5.3 billion Plus points. SAS has 2.6 million active Eurobonus members.

Any information about the tier numbers, that would also be interesting to know...on average just below 9000 points per member per year..

Well, you can't really calculate that figure out of the data given above (even though you are probably in the right neighbourhood).
The last 18 months 590000 members were active and during 2006 (12 months) 5.3 billions points were given out.
In theory tere can be a number of members who has been active outside the timeframe of 2006 but within the last 18 months (i.e. enrolled during 2007).
Still a rather small figure per active member I must admit.
In the year end report for 2006 Finnair states that there are approx 550000 active members. But that is almost the only thing mentioned about Finnair Plus in the reports.

You're 100% right in that in terms of accurate mathematics and logic but at least the rough level is there..there can't be "that" many members who fly only every 13-18 months ;)

Still a rather small figure per active member I must admit. What makes it even harder to understand the strict status rules in the Plus-scheme. It would indeed be interesting to know the number of participants at different levels.

Even SAS publish this information in the year end report, together with other information about EuroBonus. In the Finnair versions, downloaded from their site, they hardly mentioned Finnair Plus.
Considering that there actually are a number of elites, it probably means that a small number of members earn a big share of the points.
So the median earning per member is maybe 2000-3000 points (?). Is that to be considered an active member???

Also, it would be very interesting to know how many points expire each year. With such a low average earning rates many members must have problems figuring out how to use their points at all before they expire.

Another interesting tidbit would be to know how many people in Finland actually uses AA or BA as their main FFP and only uses AY Plus for postings that would give nothing on AA/BA...
Maybe it is time for AY to consolidate the FFP with another airline?

I post to Finnair, but donīt fly on tickets expensive enough to get me status. Maybe I should look into the competing FFPs too.

I fly AY occasionally and post to AA, I'm not even a member of AY's program.

Maybe I should look into the competing FFPs too.If you mainly fly on tickets that will get you 50% kms (miles) on Finnair plus, be careful to switch, as e.g. BA will only give you 25%. As well BA will not give you the Silver/Gold bonus (the 25/50% bonus is only on BA-coded flights). But it could be that AA will be more generous and give you 100%? You'll have to check that.
Another interesting thing is that Finnair plus will give you 100% on more fare classes than BA (e.g. K-class intra-Europe). BA is strictly only YBH for 100% miles (and TPs) earning.

AA is most likely more generous depending on what tickets you usually have.

Hehe :D
I post to BAEC but I haven't been able to get any status yet (current status, missing 4 flights on BA metal and 20 points to get Silver; should do some quick mileage run if I would have time ...). I just do not list it as I am lowly Blue (maybe I will go fix my profile).

Profile? Oh, yes... I only recently switched to AA, after completing with AY in 5 years a miserable 20,000 points in that I could transfer to ProrityClub safe from expiring.
Already have 3500 (or 4500 when a July AY flight will finally post) miles there in 2 months. I wanted to join BAEC, but a nice I-class Japan trip I had planned to book got switched to SAS at last moment, and all other travel this yera has been on cheapo eco.
