Does anyone know of any particularly good deals for long-term car rental to be picked up in either Chiang Mai, Isaan, or Bangkok?

A neighbor was renting a car here in Bangkok prior to his purchase of a new car. He was paying ~ 24,000 baht per month, based on my best recollection of a fleeting conversation last week. I will get more details when I see him again.

By the way, it looks like you'll need a U.S. (state) driver's license and an International Driver's License, in order to either/both rent the car and drive it here. You can get an IDL from AAA or from http://www.idl-international.com/ .

I had an IDL but it expired. I am going to get a new one as I drive often (have not been stopped yet).

Thanks transpac!

I'll look into the IDL thing this week.

For Isaan, my experience is in Udon Thani, a pickup (double cab) is normally cheaper the a car and probably more useful.
Two weeks, however, is not long term - I'd reckon on 1k baht/day incl insurance (doesn't cover tyres or battery normally), for a car maybe 1200 or so - more if automatic.
I can probably find some numbers if you're renting in Udon.
Chiang Mai - northwheels.com has been recommended to me a number of times, haven't used the yet though - car and driver is also pretty cheap in chiang mai.

Forgot to mention, if you're thinking about driving around Bangkok, you may want to rethink - not worth it IMHO. Taxi's/Skytrain are so cheap and easy to use.
