AS the title states, im trying to leave next month but the prices are rediculous for me as a student. I am looking to fly from New York either way, east or west meaning through LAX or through Europe, either way.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Check out Oasishongkong.com - they fly Vancouver - Hong Kong & London - Hong Kong or Jetstar.com for Honolulu - Australia.

How's Jetstar's long-haul international service? A cow-orker flew them from Cairns to Singapore via Darwin (JQ57 codeshared as QF355) and had some rather choice words... along with instructions to never, ever put her on them again. Would the long presumably non-stop from HNL be better?

Hi Mrp Alert!
Mrs. kaukau and I were certainly fortunate enough to get a heads-up from FlyerTalk about JetStar's "First Day Of Business Sale", when for the first 24 hours that they started service from HNL-SYD, they sold promotional tickets for $334 r/t, all in! We snagged two, and went for a week this past March, where we met several SYD FlyerTalkers, and made new friends! I think the typical HNL-SYD JetStar rate these days is in the neighborhood of $750, all in. I wrote a pretty detailed report on the flights both ways over in the QF forum: http://flyertalk.com/forum/showpost.php?p=7421529&postcount=11
And here's another thread of interest: http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=601218&highlight=jetstar
And if one searches the QF forum for keyword "jetstar", lots of threads show up.
Hope this helps,
Aloha kakou!

When you throw in the fare to/from HNL, it won't save you much, if anything. The Australian government is VERY protective of Qantas and keeps capacity on most routes to/from Oz sufficiently low to keep all fares up.

I just did a similar search for a friend (SEA-SYD) using advice from this thread and using NW+JQ going through HNL saved him about $500 over one itinerary. The only drawback was that he would be forced to do overnights in HNL on both ends, but he saw that as a positive thing. :)
