I have to fly to MXP and there are two alternatives available, both with AZ. Either the cheaper option through FCO or the much more expensive direct flight. Flying time is not a problem, but I was wondering of how safe it is flying through FCO. I am worrying about my baggage, if it will make it or not to the final destination. It is oneway to MXP from SKG.

Hasn't been good recently. Friends of mine transited through FCO three times in August and the bags didn't make the connection on any occasion. One was delivered after a week and the other two after about a day, so they weren't lost. But I understand it relates to a major breakdown aggravated by the holiday season, so if your trip isn't imminent you should be fine. I've connected through FCO dozens of times and never had any problems except during this summer.

FCO baggage handling was in the news (http://www.smh.com.au/news/news/probe-into-baggage-chaos-at-airport/2007/08/07/1186252675686.html) a lot in early August, and was is the subject of a small government investigation (http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/08/07/europe/EU-GEN-Italy-Rome-Airport.php).

For lots more stories, go to http://news.google.com and search for "rome airport baggage".

Just as I thought. I already booked a direct flight since AZ was the only option either nonstop or via FCO and I think that it was worth paying a higher fare than going throught their "customer service" experience.
Thanks a lot for your help^
