Where in NYC are you staying at? Do you want views or food? For views, on a good day, Boathouse in Central Park is nice (and it's part of idine). For food, Jean Georges has $24 pre fix lunch which is one of the best deal in town. Balthazar in Soho is also quite popular.

I like the food at Norma's in the Parker Meridien (http://www.parkermeridien.com/normas.htm), but my favorite brunches are at Sara Beth's (http://www.sarabeth.com/restaurants/).

“Fluffy”, “Frisbee-size” flapjacks and “killer muffins” make for “crazy waits” at this “friendly” Lower East Side “glorified diner” known for its “phenomenal” weekend brunches; then again, the New American “comfort food” at the “much more laid-back” dinner is also “pretty darn good.”

This thread will be generating a lot of posts!

My favorite is/was August (http://nymag.com/nymetro/food/reviews/restaurant/9970/) on Bleecker St. in the West Village. Small place, but their Sunday Brunch is perfect. I've always preferred getting their German Pancake with a bloody mary.

This place is a sure thing.

Eaten there many times for breakfast, brunch, or lunch, and there is no place like it. If you are into eggs, I highly recommend the Huevos Rancheros. The Blueberry pancakes are great too.

There was another great thread a few years back with excellent suggestions in it when I had friends coming to town. Settled on Pastis on Little W 12th, it was excellent.

Though there are probably hundreds of places to get an excellent brunch in NY.

Cash only.

The waitress said that weekend wait times can reach 2 hours. The weekend lines start forming at 9:20 for a 10:00 opening.

Strictly for informational purposes, I enjoyed their blueberry pancakes this Monday morning. The blueberries were sweet. @:-) The pancakes were enormous. Fresh warm maple syrup on the side. After you're done, you can walk them off on the lower east side, as you tour through old New York.

Best brunch buffet in NYC?

Clinton St. Bakery: I just dont go there on a Saturday or Sunday anymore. It's good (very good actually), but not worth that knd of wait IMO. Dinner is highly underrated there. The burger can be the best in the city if it actually comes out medium/medium rare.

Norma's: Also quite good. The big advantage here is that they started taking reservations through Open Table a year or two ago. Sure, it's tourist central on the weekends for brunch (so is Clinton St. btw), but it is still good and wouldnt you expect a restaurant in a hotel to be tourist central?

Alternatives:
Jane- on Houston. Res taken IIRC.

Landmarc in Time Warner- Best secret in NYC is their pain perdu. Oh my... Split that with another person and then get one of their breakfast sandwiches for yourself. I like the eggs and grilled spicy peppers on cibatta, but allof the choices are strong there for brunch (except the pancakes IMO, certainly not when that pain perdu is the alternative).

Shopsin's- Not open on Sunday's anymore, but go on Saturday morning or early afternoon if you can. It's not as good as it was in its Village location (now in Essex St. Market)...but still worth it for a truly unique NYC experience.

Not much near your hotel IME. It's a relatively sleepy area on the weekend.

Have fun!

Has anyone tried the Sunday brunch buffet at Brasserie 8½ (http://www.rapatina.com/brasserie8/)? I enjoyed dinner there once - had a super-cute waiter. ;) And the food was good, too...

I have gone to Artisinal http://www.artisanalbistro.com/for their brunch a few times (Saturday or Sunday), and have enjoyed it immensely. It is not a buffet, but they have some great a la carte items including amazing fondue, almond croissant french toast, great omelettes and of course an absolutely unbeatable selection of cheeses. It is located at 2 Park Avenue at 32nd Street. I highly, highly recommend it!^

Norma's at the Parker Meridien (56th bet. 6th and 7th), but you must make a reservation! Otherwise be prepared to wait over an hour!

I must plan this one out myself - staying in the Millennium Hilton with free b'fast, so might be a later brunch than originally planned .... Might even be a "lunner" :p

A really fun place is The Sunburnt Cow (http://www.thesunburntcow.com/cow/index.html). Located in Alphabet City, it features Australian cuisine - and for brunch, $15 buys you an entire brunch spread and endless beer/bloody marys/mamosa's. It's the best deal in the city.

Hey brunchers - any suggestions in the theater district? Maybe on 9th avenue in the 40's or 50's?

Ms. JG and I frequently brunch on the UWS, but we're meeting some relatives who are driving in from the hinterlands to go to a show, and I'd like to make it easy on them. (One of them has just finished chemo, and doesn't have the energy to traipse around the city too much).

Thanks

The most I've had to wait at Clinton Street is 45-55 min, even at busy times. It's well worth it though, try the butter rum drink and pancakes. The LES is a pretty interesting area to walk around while you're waiting, one of the gritty up and coming neighborhoods in NYC. Not sure if shops are open that early in the morning though. At that time in the morning on weekends, the city should be pretty dead and it would take you at most 15 min to get from the W to LES. Finding a cab on Lex should be a piece of cake. On the weekdays cabs are hard to find after 830 am and you would have to budget more time to get down there.

Hi jg,

-Landmarc at Time Warner (see the first page of this thread)
-Eatery on 9th and 53rd. Dont order the french toast with bananas & cream. Otherwise good. Some people love it. FWIW...it is a little edgy. Also quite crowded. (Landmarc is better IMO)
-If you want to go further upscale, Porterhouse in TWC has a jazz brunch.
-The Library at Hudson Hotel has a nice breakfast setup (58th b/t 8th and 9th)

Interesting question. The momentum is very much against buffets these days...

I honestly cant think of one of one at the moment. I guess I'll think some more and post if one comes to mind.

Great price; too bad the food in the window looked so bad!

We often go to North Square in the Washington Park Square hotel. They have live jazz on Sunday in one of the room. Otherwise it's pretty chill, the food is simple yet delicious and their brunch menu is pretty inexpensive.

Bar Boulud is right across from Lincoln Center and has a very nice brunch...particularly if you're in the mood for some nice wine and a more French accented meal (don't miss the charcuterie platter)

I was there on Sunday at 1pm--90 mins wait.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Jane, on Houston around Thomson - I have had several excellent brunches there when family or friends were in town.

Not as high end as some of the places mentioned, but a couple of weeks ago, I had a very nice Sunday jazz brunch at the Garage, on 7th Ave South in the Village. Fixed price $16 includes your first bloody or mimosa. A couple of items do have an upcharge - $7 extra got me a decadent surf & turf eggs benedict (filet on one side, lobster tail on the other). We got there at 12:30 and there was no wait; they also do take reservations. A very good jazz band plays 11-4.
