Welcome to Flyertalk.
That's probably the worst time to come to NYC as far as hotel availability and rates - Thanksgiving thru New Years. When I was doing business travel there last year, there was one week I couldn't find anything decent, until someone here pointed me towards Quikbook.com. So that's one place I'd look.
Also, have a look on the NYC forum here, people there may have more suggestions.

what is "cheaper"?
give us a budget and we'll give you ideas
remember to add in state and city taxes- perhaps another 20%!
yes, this is the busiest time- even the jersey city hyatt is over $400 a night!!
some say they get deals on priceline- but not if its selling out anyway at full price!
welcome to FT!

Welcome, Simon. As others have said that is the busiest time of year, but what you probably already know is that it also a terrific time of year to be in NYC. Please let us know your maximum spending limit and we will try to help you!

My first bit of advice, after saying welcome, is to reserve something now. Even if you cancel it because you get something at a better rate later, reserve something now. Airfares are already dropping for europe in the fall, they never drop this early, so I expect the city to be very very busy this season.
As everybody else has said, even though it can be miserable weather around then, it's a very busy time in the city. The Euro and Pound will send lots of people over here for their holiday shopping because the exchange is so good and they just don't care what the hotels cost in dollars.
I wouldn't hope for promptions, discounts anything like that. Occupancy will be very high, and the hotels don't need to discount much at all. One hotel I stayed in over March for $99 is going for close to $500 now for that timeframe.

No discounts are available in NYC in December. Due to the decreasing USD against almost every other foreign currency (excluding South America) we are jammed with tourist. And December they can charge rates of $400+ in midtown. I'd suggest you look at Brooklyn, Long Island City & downtown Manhattan as an alternative.
Jersey City is good because you have PATH nearby for most locations and service is 24 hrs.
There are some Inns available but you have to indicate what you will or will not accept?
I would not suggest Northern NJ nor airport lodging as the amount of transportation time require for back and forth is not worth it.
