www.zagat.com just released info on the best cupcake in New York City.
FYI, Brooklyn is part of NYC. ;)

I'm glad Magnolia is not in the top 5.

Discuss.

1. Sugar Sweet Sunshine
126 Rivington St.; 212-995-1960
Specializing in “superior cupcakes” rated tops in the genre – no mean feat in “cupcake-crazed” NYC – this “cute” Lower East Side bakery/cafe “warms you” with a “comfy” “place to sit” while sampling its trademark “little pieces of heaven” and “numerous other” “addictive” desserts like “moist cakes”, cookies and bars; with a “laid-back” vibe that’s as “unpretentious” as the goods are “completely fresh”, it definitely hits the “sweet spot.”

2. Amy’s Bread
250 Bleeker St.; 212-675-7802
Carbophiles “sing the praises” of the “heavenly” “artisan” goods at Amy Scherber’s bakery trio, now considered a NYC “classic”; reknowned for its “fantastic” handmade breads (including signatures like the semolina-raisin-fennel), it also traffics in sweets from “out-of-this-world” sticky buns to “awesome cupcakes”, as well as “delicious sandwiches” and other “good lunchables” – perfect for “eating at one of the few tables” if you can snag one.

3. Baked BKLYN*
359 Van Brunt St.; 718-222-0345
“Delicious” “twists on old American favorites” produced by this Red Hook “hipster” bakery – “homey, delicate”, “amazing” cakes and cupcakes, muffins, scones, the “best” brownies – lead many to moon “wish it were in Manhattan”; its “funky” modern digs make a “nice place to sit with your coffee and something sweet” (and there are also panini and a few other prepared items at lunchtime) – meaning it’s perfect for “fortifying yourself” pre-“Fairway.”

3. Billy’s Bakery*
126 Rivington St.; 212-995-1960
“Bless Billy!” enthuse admirers of this Chelsea bakery known for its “moist, buttery” cupcakes topped with “to-die for” icing, as well as for “tasty” full-size cakes, pies and other “homespun” “American-style” sweets, all “beautifully displayed” in “hip” “retro”-’40s digs; the “friendly” counter folk only “add to the sugar high”, and while “lines out the door” are not uncommon, at least they’re “not as long” as at that higher-profile cupcakery to the south.

3. Make My Cake*
184 Ninth Ave.; 212-647-9956
“Just like grandma’s” is the word on the Southern specialties from these Harlem bakeries, home to the “out-of-this-world” likes of red velvet cake, sweet potato cheesecake, “light, fluffy cupcakes” and a butter-cream number that’ll “melt in your mouth”; whether for birthdays, weddings or catering, a visit is sure to make your day; N.B. the St. Nicholas Avenue original is a sit-down cafe while the adjunct farther Uptown is retail only.

Down thread it was brought up that an address was incorrect. I'd advise anyone making the trek to these places to call first to verify the address. I copied/pasted the original article. Sorry for the confusion.

Hmmm... perhaps it is time for Dan to have an annual Cupcake Reality Tour?

I'm guessing that info needs correcting for one of these.

I edited the OP to include a disclaimer.

Well I havent tried any of the "top 5" but have had the pleasure of a Magnolia's Bakery cupcake and it was absolutely delicious ^^.

Looking forward to going back there when I visit again in October :)

I was in the city yesterday; and did a run to Magnolia.

Seems like the staff has lost some of their attitude. ^

As long as I was visiting, I had a red velvet cupcake that was moist and dense.
Topped with fresh whipped cream. Cost $2.25. Cupcakes are self-serve in the front as you enter.
I also got a small container to go, of their banana trifle. :o :o
Haven't had this in a while. I think the word decadent comes to mind. Oh man, was that good!

Magnolia is also famous for their old fashion, just like Grandma use to make, multi-layered cakes. I wish they offered a sampling. :D

I didnt make it to Magnolia's on my last trip - but I did happen to walk past Buttercup's. Bought some for my NYC based family and they enjoyed them. YUM ;)

I have been spending some time trying to perfect the icing myself at home :D

Have not tried the red velvet cupcakes - but will try to sample next time I am in NYC.

Rivington? No, definitely not... Billy's is in Chelsea (as the Zagat description mentions but the address doesn't match): http://www.billysbakerynyc.com/location.html

Ninth Ave between 21st and 22nd Streets. Good stuff... It and Buttercup are my favorite two, although I haven't tried the others... Oh, looks like they put Billy's address in the Make My Cake description. It's been so long since I've bothered with the lines (or the staff!) at Magnolia that I don't even remember how they compare to Billy's or Buttercup.

I've been going to Sugar Sweet Sunshine Bakery on Rivington for years. Their lemon cupcakes are without a doubt, the best I've ever had.

There's a new Magnolia's on Columbus at W 69th. Since I'm only one block away, I've been stopping in WAY too much. I do agree that the banana pudding is the best ever!!

Went to Buttercup with some colleagues two weeks ago to celebrate the end of an unpleasant project. I didn't get all the fuss about this place. Took home 6 cupcakes to my wife and kids and they all agreed that we've had better cupcakes out of a box mix.

Over here on the West Coast, people consider Sprinkles Cupcakes to be "'Da Bomb." I tried it, and (aside from the fact that it might have been the only $3 cupcake I've ever had) it was the worst $3 cupcake I've ever had. Not worth the price, not worth the hype.
