I am flying CVG-FCO on DL connecting on another ticket to AZ FCO-NAP.
Delta tells me they will check the luggage all the way to FCO.
Will I have to claim it at FCO as it is the first point of entry into FCO or will DL transfer it automatically at FCO where I can then claim it at NAP?
I know in the USA the first point of entry is where you have to claim the bags but I remember something about green striped luggage tags in Europe.

Hello chuck1....
please clarify:
if the baggage is checked to FCO, you have to claim it there.
If (as i suppose) you wrote FCO in the bolded sentence but you meant NAP, then you *must* claim it at NAP.
hope this helps.

Sorry...my mistake.
Delta tells me they will check the bag all the way to NAP.
What I am wondering is (like the USA), does Italy require you to claim your bag at the first port of entry (FCO in this case) and clear customs before checking it again for the FCO-NAP segment...or can you just get it and clear customs at NAP?
Thanks!

No. You'll "clear" custom at your final destination (NAP)....
btw, be very careful at NAP airport and in the city... there are several pickpockets and their skills are incredible. So pay great attention.

Should add a caveat that as long as the destination airport has customs facilities (which NAP does).

Doesn't one have to switch from non-Schengen to Schengen to make this connection? Does that affect the situation?

hi SMB12. he'll arrive in FCO at Terminal C and will have to move to Terminal A... he should clear immigration at FCO. But the bags will travel on their way directly to the new plane.

Fair enough. I vaguely remember not touching checked bags in CDG on a DTW-CDG-VCE routing, but I also don't remember having to declare anything or doing customs in the US sense of the action.

Yes. Europeans travelling to the US are always surprised by the need to fill in the little white form, collect bags, take them through customs, and recheck them for the connecting flight. For example, if you were to fly to my local airport in southern Italy via Rome, your bags would be checked through to the local airport even though you would be arriving on a domestic flight (and most days during the week, that airport doesn't have any international flights anyway). If you really need to speak to a customs agent I'm sure there'd be one at the airport somewhere, but you'd have to look.
It's probably something to do with the fact that (continental) Europe is a land mass with a large number of countries, even after Schengen, so if they want to protect borders, policing airports is unlikely to be a particularly significant method of doing this, as most people wanting to evade border checks would presumably try to do so by land or sea. The authorities concentrate their efforts by making checks within the countries instead.
