Being frequent visitors to Thailand, we usually prefer to rent a holiday house rather than taking a room or two in a hotel: we get to see different places, off the tourtist track, and enjoy a better level of accommodation at rates that are often cheaper than in hotels.
We also recommend the Thai budget carriers - Nok Air and Air Asia - over Thai, for doemstic flights. We have not flown on One2Go as their planes seem very old!
One place we really enjoyed, combining the villa idea and Nok Air, was Gecko Villa (http://www.geckovilla.com) - a large house in the country out of Udon Thani in the North East of the country. We only used 2 of the 3 bedrooms, but as we had the entire place to ourselves, with a delightful private pool and meals prepared for us daily in the rate, we thoroughly enjoyed it here and really did get to see Thailand from a different angle. What's more, the hosts were very kind and friendly and really made our stay.
Just one word of advice iof combining international flights and domestic ones: check whether you need to move from the new bangkok airport to the old one (from Suwwanaphum to Don Muang.) If you want a quick connection, just use Air Asia.
