I read yesterday an article on YLE news that there has been more delays than usual due to technical problems in the long-haul fleet. The repair time has got longer and often MD-11 parts have to be flown from Finland to other destinations. In May only 78% of the long-haul planes left on time (5% point decrease).

Could it be that Finnair has underestimated the pace in which MD-11's have been retired from passenger service? I wonder if KLM as another operator of passenger MD-11's has the same problems?

The KLM Forum has regularly reported on the KLM MD-11 fleet problems. AY is not alone.

If I recall correctly, the YLE news article specifically quoted a Finnair manager saying that part of the problem was the rareness of MD-11 in passenger service, which makes getting spare-parts in case of tech difficult - they usually have to send the part all the way from Finland.

This 78% includes all longhauls, also A340 delays.

And this 78% is not all the true. Longhauls may depart behind the schedule but they still arrive on time at their destination.

Especially powerfull MD-11 can make it faster, lazy and slow A340 is a different story.:D

Well, for KLM, it is not just limited to the MD11. At KLM, they have one of the highest aircraft utilization rate in the industry for all aircraft types, leaving very little recovery time for delays. See the KLM thread and the wonderful analysis done there.

I fully don't follow the logic here... what the aircraft age has to do with this problem? I'd say it's the rareness of the aircraft type, not the actual age, that is the issue. There are many, many much older (M80/737/747/757/767/A300/A310 etc.) planes, than AY M11s, operating around the world without any major issues regarding their age...

Also this new longhaul fleet is causing problems.
OH-LQC, AY's newest A340, wasnt today able to leave to PVG. After this it was tried on HEL-BOM route but after five and half hours delay they decided to cancel BOM.

Last time OH-LQC caused cancellation in June after one month in service.
