I am wanting to visit New York but Hotels are certainly expensive. A friend has told me he stayed across the river in New Jersey and it was an easy and short commute to New York using the Lincoln Tunnel. Is it a safe area? Apparently there are shuttle services available.

My decision will mean either 2 nights in New York or maybe 4 nights across the river and see more of New York.

If your friend means Hoboken New Jersey, yes. It's fine. Nice typical NY/NJ feel ot it. Local shops and restaurants. The PATH train takes you into Manhattan (aka The City) in a couple of minutes.

If your friend means Weehawken, that's ok too (no shops/restaurants, just a Sheraton. Ferry service to Manhattan is just paces from the hotel.

If your friend means a dumpy motel adjacent to the tunnel, then he's not your friend. ;)

Did they offer suggestions? If so, post away and we'll over analyze it. :D

I suggest coming to Jersey City, also a good place to stay.. The Jersey City Hyatt Regency is ranked the best out of 7 Hotels in NYC under $200 a night..

There are several hotel chains in Harmon Meadow (http://www.harmonmeadow.com/pages/plazamap.html)(Secaucus NJ). It's a short commute to mid-town Manhattan via NJ Transit bus 320 (http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/bus/T0320.pdf) which uses the Lincoln Tunnel.
Aside from the the fat and cholesterol laden menus at the local eateries, I'd consider the area "safe". ^

I commute on the 320 bus regularly, and there are always out of town visitors using it to reach NYC.

If you insist on it, do Hoboken. Nice area nowadays, and lots of PATH and ferry! service which is really nice on a pretty day.

Check their rates for early October (I did), they sure aren't under $200 a night then!

I've spent a lot of time in Jersey City and there has been a lot of investment of late and I'm sure you'll find the area quite safe.

Just FYI: As far as I know there are NO Hotels in Hoboken. At least until early NEXT winter when the "W Hoboken" opens.

If your friend suggested hotels by the Lincoln Tunnel he may have been suggesting those motels and a Days Inn on Tonnelle Avenue which is NOT one of the safest areas and difficult to get to NYC was there. I stayed at teh Days when my apartmnet was being renovated (could not get anything under 300 a night in NYC and Jersey City wsa sold out. It was a weeknight too!)

DO NOT go to these "Lincoln TUnnel area hotels!

Your best bet is Jersey City. A short walk to the Path train and some nice dining options. I should know... I LIVE in Jersey City. But BOOK EARLY!!!! Lately these hotels have filled up fast with business travelers and other NYC tourists discovering the beautiful ;) little city across the Hudson.

Try PRiceline. IT's F-T legend that a number of people were able to get teh Hyatt Jersey City at a good rate.

Too bad teh Westin Jersey City is not open yet. That will help the double snorers traffic. :)

Secaucus is another decent option and again has some good dining options and the bus to NYC. Here you want to check out the Embassy SUites (although a little too pricey for NJ) the COurtyard and the Holiday Inn and Amerisuites which are walking distance to the Bus stop. There is a LaQuinta Inn (which is the latest incarnation for that hotel,) but I don't know if they have a shuttleto the bus stop

Priceline deals still exist, but are no longer legendary. There was a time when the JC Hyatt and Doubletree routinely went for under $40/night. I once snagged the Doubletree with a $37 Priceline bid. But I think it's been a few years since the prices have been anywhere near that. See biddingfortravel.com and betterbidding.com for an idea of what those hotels go for these days.

For a hotel in Manhattan you can always try your luck on Priceline or wait until closer to your trip and try to book a hotel through lastminute.com or equivalent.

I live and work in the area and have had luck getting reasonable priceline stays in the meadowlands when I need to put up the in-laws.

I personally would not stay at the Days Inn or the other hotel in North Bergen but I don't think either one would be unsafe.

One other option would be the new Hilton in Edgewater in City Place. There are some local shops/ restaurants and you could take a direct NJT bus into the city or to the ferry. The hotel may also have their own shuttle to the ferry.

Sorry about delay as I am trying to contact my friend. He specifically told me about some motels close to the tunnel and not to go there. He stayed at a Marriott that was in a group of properties not far away. My friend is the sort of guy that can generally look after himself. He was traveling alone but I will be with my wife so that is where my concern comes from. I do not recall if he told me the name of the area. I have been doing some searching online and it seems that it was most likely the one in Secausus.

Maybe overdosed on too much "Law and Order"

The Marriott that was in a group of properties not far away could have been the Jersey City Courtyard or by the Marriott collection of properties by Newark Airport.

EWR Fox... thought I said it before - I live up by Journal Square. I"m guessing you live in Jersey City. Work takes me to downtown JC as well as Hoboken and other places.

A few blocks from the JSQ Path station there is a Ramada. I personally would not stay at the Ramada because once upon a time it used to be a so-called "no tell motel" called the Mayflower which kept the police busy, esp on weekends.

I only visited the lobby once to send a couple looking for a cheap local hotel I met at Jouranl Square. It still looks basically 70's decor. I have not seen the rooms but the palce looks scarey to me.

Then again, I've been spoiled by Westin Heavenly Beds. :)

Never knew you live near JSQ.. I live up in the heights, a few blocks up from Hwy 139 and JFK. It’s a small world isn’t it? ;)

What about downtown Newark? Though I haven't lived in the NYC area for several years now, I do remember easy access to Newark from NYC via PATH and NJ Transit trains.

Would this be another good option? No one seems to have mentioned it.

Newark is pretty easy to get to, but significantly farther from Manhattan than Jersey City and not nearly as safe.

The area of Newark right outside Penn station, where the Hilton is located is pretty safe. It boarders the IRONBOUND area which has some great portuguese/brazilian restaurants.

However, i would go with the above recommendations of the Jersey City hotels in the Newport area if possible. They are nice, and there are tons of restaurants around here. Plus its so easy to get into Manhattan. The marriott courtyard is right next to the path.

Thanks everyone.

I am now planning to book Courtyard Jersey City Newport. It seems almost perfect for our needs.

Lonely FLyer...

The Courtyard is a nice property just about a one minute walk to the Path station which can get you into NYC.

A number of restaurants are right near the Courtyard including a purrsonal favorite, Dorien's Old Hand PUb. Superior Customer Service, very godo food and decent prices. I'm sort of a regular in there (if I"m not busy with my Cat sitting business... too many stories of Pet sitters showing up sloshed when feeding sweet Cats and dogs.)

If you need suggestions on what to do around the Jersey City area or getting around PM me.

been meaning to try that place. My favorite in that area is Azucar. Excellent cuban food. Also, in Hoboken, which is a quick cab ride or path ride away, there are TONS of cool restaurants and bars..... of course theres always manhattan as well. :-)
