I'm eyeballing J fares to BLR ex ORD this fall and ITA is coming up with Air India to BOM and then onward on Jet Airways for 50% the cost the legacy US carriers. Is this normal or...? Have never priced this before

Probably is. AI does tend to sell cheaper than mainstream US carriers. Do evaluate the AI J product though, first.

FWIW: Never flown 9W myself, but I've only heard good things about their domestic service from friends and family.

9W is good domestic and short-haul international.

AI and 9W are starting non-stop services between JFK and BOM this week (1st August I think) on (some) new AC. Might be worth pricing that up since you'll be in J and no layover in LHR etc would not be an issue? From ads in the local press in BOM, the new J looks pretty good on AI although not sure how many new AC/ refitted old AC they'll have on launch day. 9W is pretty good already (AFAIK from friends) but are also redoing their F, J & Y product for the long haul flights. You would have to go via JFK I think for the non-stop options to BOM.

It is only AI that is going non-stop BOM-JFK. 9W is planning a stop in BRU.
AI's new 777LR J cabin looks decent and being new should be good for atleast a couple of months.

Heard that on-time performance has become a priority with a spare 77L being stationed in BOM for eqpt problems.
You have to balance the in-flight hard product with the entire AI experience - including the horrendous ground staff..
