I know NYC restaurants have been talked to death here but I couldn’t really find what I was looking for with the search thing. Anyway, I’m going into the city either this Friday or next (just for the day). I’m looking for either a casual lunch or dinner place that would have good food. I’m open to pretty much every cuisine as well.

Not to hijack this thread, but I'm looking for a good hotel somewhere in North America.

No particular location, price range, or chain.

Suggestions?

Sarabeth's on Central Park South is not too bad.

There are many, many, many other good restaurants in NYC that satisfy your extremely loose criteria as well. Go to menupages.com and have a look around.

This is a place where it is too easy to overplan. Walk out of the subway (any stop), turn left onto the sidewalk (or right if the mood strikes), walk two blocks (three if you're not quite hungry enough)...and pick a place to eat from among the restaurants you have passed. You are very unlikely to be disappointed in this adventure!

I'll certainly be looking for a joint that has un-New Yorker price on my next visit. ;)

Then you want a New York Pizza place that sells by the slice.. or
any of the New York deli.. best for the buck. Not to mention the
street vendors...

I’ll be more specific. My parents want some bonding time before I go to college so we decided on Aug 3 for half a day…lunch. I made reservations at Spice Market for dinner some time ago but we don’t want to eat there for lunch. I also called Per Se and almost died when they said their dinner pre fix price is the same for lunch. I’m looking for something classy. Something along the lines of Eleven Madison Park or one of the may Jean George restaurants in the city would be good.

In that case do Jean-Georges for lunch. One of the best prix fixe deals in town.

Jean Georges offers excellent value at lunch. On weekdays, the main dining room offers a two course lunch for $24. That is probably the least expensive meal one can have at a three Michelin star, four NYT star restaurant. Everyday, the more casual Nougatine at Jean Georges serves a three course prix-fixe for $25, another good value.

I had lunch at M. Vongerichten's new restaurant Perry St. last week. It was a very good meal and was also priced at $24 for two courses plus dessert, $12 for additional courses.

I also had lunch at Le Bernardin last week, the temple of seafood. I was a bit disappointed. The meal felt rushed and the head waiter was a bit impersonal and cold.

I also had dinner at Daniel last week. The whole package, food, service, decor was outstanding in every way. It certainly ranks as one of the top 100meals of my life. I also had a conversation with M. Boulud who is very warm and friendly.

I highly recommend David Burke and Donatella. It's located on 61st Street between Park and Lexington.
Food is fabulous, the place is gorgeous and elegant and lunch is a bargain.

I think it's exactly what you're looking for.

I’ll be more specific....

Specific is good... :p

Restaurant "Week" (which extends for two weeks) lists some restaurants which do the 3-course lunch deal through Labor Day (look for the asterisk): www.restaurantweek.com

I, too, recommend davidburke and donatella. I've been several times. Just tried Jojo - good, but I was hungry not long afterwards since you choose two "small" plates and a dessert instead of an appetizer, entree, and dessert.

If any FlyerTalkers want to meet for lunch at dbd, I'd be up for it! :)

If you are looking for sushi, i suggest the "Sushi Lounge" on Saint Marks Place East Village….. Eat as much as you want and the price is cut in half as long as is it above 10 dollars..

I just wanted to let you guys know where I ended up eating. I was with my parents so after a bit of walking we stumbled across Rue 57. We had a really great lunch and will definitely go back. It was a large French bistroesk restaurant. The food was pretty good. They had unique sandwiches and a selection of brunch items. Thanks gain for all your suggestions.
