I am exiting the US via ferry at Bar Harbor, Maine for Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Where is the best place for rates (in either country) to convert USD-CDN. Thanks.

Canadian banks will give a better rate, though not at the airport branches who charge higher.

You could check on the American side before you leave, and if you can find a place that has a spread of no more than 5% between what they buy at and what they sell at, this is an acceptable maximum, so say you find a place that offers to pay 93 cents for Canadian dollars and to sell them for 98 cents, then you could deal there. A better rate would be closer to the mid market rate of 96, but you are unlikely to get it unless you trade on the street with a Canadian coming in to the US.
