I'm planning on going to Paris later this year with a large format (8x10) camera. Has anyone had any problems travelling abroad with one?
I've taken this camera with me on road trips but never on a plane. Is there anything I should watch out for?

If you're talking something along the lines of one of the full frame Canons, you should be ok fitting this in a back back/large camera bag with two or three lenses (depending on the size of the lenses, of course). What you will probably have to sacrifice, if you intend to bring one, is a laptop in your hand luggage. This is due to current European hand baggage rules which, sad to say, make no exemptions.
Obviously, you could check things in but this would be at your own risk.

No, an 8x10 is much larger than a full frame Canon. It is a camera for using pieces of film that are 8 inches by 10 inches in size. I have traveled with a 4x5 but not in many years. The only thing I can say, not having personal experience with a large format camera recently is to find out the size limits for carry on bags from the airline, airport authorities that are relevant to your routing and then see if you can get your gear in one bag that will meet the carry on requirement. Im guessing that the ancillary gear, sheet film holders, tripod and such will have to be checked. I would try to avoid checking the camera and lenses.

Oops, I stand corrected. So we're talking "huge" then...

I don't have a large format camera but here is my advice based on flying with a ton of Canon gear.
First make sure you either carry the film on the plane or plan to buy it in France. The baggage X-ray equipment will ruin the film. Anything over 800 speed should also not go through the checkpoint x-ray. Here in the US you have the right to ask for hand inspection of all your film. Some checkpoints are better about that than others meaning in some places they will happily do it and in others you might have to push them a bit. Don't know about in France but I'd find out in advance so that I could either get the film developed in France or ship it back separately.
As for the equipment carry as much of it on as possible. Unless you use a very compact tripod I'd recommend packing in a bag with clothing as padding. But remove the tripod head and carry that on. I have a very compact tripod that I take when flying that attaches to my camera backpack and I've never had any trouble carrying that on.
Take all lenses on board as well. And if there is any possible way to carry the camera do so. When I was considering large format I was looking at how compact the camera would get for flying and hiking purposes. Take at least one or two film holders if you can so that you can still use the camera if your checked baggage is delayed.
A good short primer on flying with large format gear is here: http://www.largeformatphotography.info/travel/lftravel.html

Excellent post jbjbts. One of the most informative I have seen here.
