done.

I created one here: http://flickr.com/groups/402527@N22/

It's simple and invite only, but as it grows we can tweak it more.

Sounds good to me...

...and done: http://www.flickr.com/groups/ftphotos/

:D

Edit - dang, beaten by a few seconds!

Mine's public access, though. Any preference as to which we prefer?

I have no problem with it being an open group, I just thought we may want to restrict it first.

No real problems from me either way.

I just put in the "rules" section of mine that you have to be a member of FT to join the group. I figured that would be easier than having to send out invites to everyone who wanted to join.

Okay, have to ask - what is a "flickr group"? :confused:

Flickr is a photo sharing site. You can upload photos to your own personal account, organize them into albums, tag them, and contribute them to "pools" (an album associated with a group of people).

So, we're talking about creating a pool for Flyertalkers - it would probably be a good place to stick DO photos, let people upload great shots they took on their globe-hopping trips, maybe have a "hall of fame" for FT Photo Contest winners, etc.

The pool can also have its own discussion forum, although given that we've already got FT, that's probably a bit redundant.

bdjohns1
May 7, 07, 10:43 am
I should also mention that it's free to join. If you have an account with Yahoo, that gets you into Flickr. You're allowed to upload a certain number of pictures with a free account, but you can upgrade to an unlimited "pro" account for $25/year. The pro account also lets you upload high-resolution files.

I think one central group is the best idea that way there is only one place for people to go and we don't have conversations that go "no, it's in the 3rd or 4th FT pool"...

OK - so I just joined and uploaded a few photos. Thanks!

One question since I am new to Flickr - what are the advantages of a Pro (paid) account? I read through the FAQ and online help, and it seems that the only advantage is no monthly upload bandwidth limit (which is rather generous already), the ability to create more than 3 sets, and being able to display more than 200 photos. Is that it, or am I missing something?

Here's the full list from Flickr:

Absolutely! Upgrade to a Pro Account for just US$24.95 a year. Here's what you'll get with a Pro Account:

* Unlimited uploads (10MB per photo)
* Unlimited storage
* Unlimited bandwidth
* Unlimited photosets
* Permanent archiving of high-resolution original images
* The ability to replace a photo
* Post any of your photos in up to 60 group pools
* Ad-free browsing and sharing

Compare that to what you get with a Free Account:

* 100 MB monthly upload limit (5MB per photo)
* 3 sets
* Photostream views limited to the 200 most recent images
* Post any of your photos in up to 10 group pools
* Only smaller (resized) images accessible (though the originals are saved in case you upgrade later)

I'm planning on doing more stuff on Flickr as time allows, so I know I'll be beyond 3 sets and 200 photos soon. The full-res option isn't really big for me, because I don't want to upload full-res images to minimize image theft. I figure $25/year is reasonable for what you get.

Thanks for the clarification. :) Being the cheapskate that I am, and since I don't really plan to do much online sharing through Flickr (I currently use the Kodak Gallery and Shutterfly), I think I'll stick with the free acct for the time being. Seems like a great site, so far, but I wish the info about site features was a bit clearer.

I have both a kodak gallery site and a flickr site. The kodak gallery site saved my butt when I lost my harddrive on my laptop and thought I lost all my pics. Thankfully, 90% had been uploaded to kodakgallery and for 40 bucks I had two cds of the photos at my house in a week.

Now, I back my pictures up on two harddrives and flickr and sometimes kodak gallery.

I still use kodak gallery for a few things, including making christmas cards, invitations and sending my mom photobooks and really nice prints. The great thing about kodakgallery is that they have a nice amount of merchandise that create using their tools and since they are so mainstream, you can find coupons galore, especially around holidays.

They also have expedited service, which worked well when I had to print up another sixty ernest the puppy christmas cards this last year.

However, I love the communtity aspect to flickr, I would never use myspace or any other social networking tools (maybe I'm just too old), but I find that I have made some really interesting contacts through flickr.

I also love their tools and that you can send photos directly to flickr from your phone. Ditto for the capabilty of moblogging.

I would really recommend upping to pro if you can.

Thanks, lalala, for the extra insight. I'll see if my usage warrants an upgrade in the future. :)

As a side note, I am in the process of switching my business from Kodak Gallery to Shutterfly. The reason is that I am now more concerned about color management, and Shutterfly is a bit more commital about their standards. Perhaps Kodak Gallery is the same (they do have the option of turning off their color enhancement feature, a switch that is buried in your account options), but they are less commital and less public about their commitment to standards.

Am a bit hesitant to put other photos up on flickr because, well ya know, there are more TR Photo Contests to come and I don't want to give the competition a peek beforehand.... Who, MOI, a wee bit competitive?!?? ;)

OK, just kidding. Now that the weekend is here (yay!), hopefully I can start to do some serious uploading to the FT flickr group.

Either way is fine. I was going to come up with some kind of recognition "badge" to give each image that placed in an FT contest in the comments section. There are a lot of Flickr groups that do something like that already - you get a special "badge" in the comments if you get X number of favorites, etc.

:). I'm thinking maybe to give the competitions a rest for a bit. I kind of sense that participation is dropping a little.

I'm also wondering if the competitions should be here, or in Trip Reports. More visibility in Trip Reports. . .

Yeah, I noticed that voting seems to have tailed off a little - I need more votes to get that case of Cholula! Maybe if we want to make these contests a little more official, we can either ask the TB (or just go straight to the HOM) about putting up announcement posts to get some publicity.

I think that TR is probably the place to keep the contests for now - it keeps everyone looking in the same place.

Hey all, I just opened a Flickr account so that I could link pics for FT trip reports and competitions.

This is all new to me; I uploaded two sets of six pics, from two Big Island beaches in South Kohala. Hopefully these get reveiewed then made public, per my settings.

Is Flickr okay with having pictures at the beach with people in them? Just curious about privacy and/or rights when one takes a photo containing other beachgoers.

I got bored just taking scenic shots, so tried to get some shots both of the beach and of people in action, like chatting etc. I may change some of them as the people shots may distract from the scenery/background. This was done with a non-wide angle lens so I found my proper scenic lens and may try these shots at a proper scenic angle.

Bizi,

As long as you're not commercially exploiting the images, you don't need to do anything. IIRC, basically all beaches on Hawaii are public, hence there's no "reasonable expectation of privacy" and you can show the photos publicly. If you wanted to use those pictures in an advertisement, you'd want to have a model release. Flickr's supposed to be non-commercial (although some people have got paying gigs for big companies (http://strobist.blogspot.com/2007/04/flickr-and-you-part-1-rebekkas_19.html) based on their Flickr portfolios).

In other words, you're fine. Welcome to the group!

Oh my god, I don't think they care about anything. Just don't search for things like leather at work!

I love taking pictures of people taking pictures, more than I like taking pictures of my poor abused dog.

Yes, I think, in reply to the OP, but first a question:

Recently I created a Yahoo-hosted website (I had previously registered the domain elsewhere, but decided to switch it to Yahoo). I thought that it would be easy to link from the website to photos I had uploaded using Yahoo 360, but not so. I figured out how to incorporate links to the photos on my website, but unless I am mistaken, it seems as though anyone who clicks on one of those links is accessing not only the photos but my Yahoo 360 account, which is not what I had in mind.

Then I started hearing about Flicker, and I'm wondering if that would serve me (a) as well as Yahoo 360, for sharing photos with friends, and (b) better than Yahoo 360, for linking photos to my website.

I'd appreciate any insights and/or suggestions from any more website/ Flicker/ Yahoo-skilled people than me.

Flickr has no bandwidth limitations (aside from the amount you can personally upload unless you upgrade to a "pro" account), so don't feel restricted. I'm part of a pool that at the moment has 9300 members and 19,000+ photos.

As far as the number of pictures you can contribute to the pool, I haven't put any limits on that (although some groups do). Generally, what I do is I group all of the pictures from one trip into a set, and then contribute a few pictures from that set to the pool. Then, if you click on any of my pictures, you'll see the set it came from along the right side of the screen (along with any other pools it's in).

That tree in your Anaeho'omalu Bay shot looks pretty familiar - I got the other side of it for you last year: :)

Flickr's official policy is that it's not supposed to be used as an image-hosting site for other web pages (for stuff like avatars, icons, etc). You can put your photos from Flickr on another website, but each photo has to link back to its Flickr page. They provide code to do that when you click the "all sizes" icon above one of your images, like so:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/bdjohnson79/504961859/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/218/504961859_b951193cbb_o.jpg" width="532" height="800" alt="Lake Shore Drive at Sunset" /></a>

If you want to put a picture from Flickr here on FT, you have to convert that to BBCode markup:

{url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/bdjohnson79/504961859/}{img} http://farm1.static.flickr.com/218/504961859_b951193cbb_o.jpg{/img}{/url}
(replacing {} with [] brackets)

If you just want to point friends to your flickr page to share pictures with them, that would work though.

bdjohns1
May 24, 07, 1:26 pm
Just to reply to myself, but in helping out with a Flickr question over in the in-flight photos I found an easier way to get Flickr-friendly BBCode for linking to images:

this script (http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/4771) ^

On the "all sizes" page for your photo, it adds an extra text box with the BBCode to display the image and have it link back to the Flickr photo page, per Flickr's rules.

Need to be using Firefox with Greasemonkey to have it work.

From the Flickr Blog.....

You all take remarkable photographs. From documenting momentous change to capturing the small precious moments around you, the Flickr community has been sharing some remarkable photographs for over four years.

Team Flickr has long wanted to create a way to make it easier for those who use photos as a part of their daily business to do so in a way that respects the talent and rights of our members.

The great folks at Getty Images and Flickr are joining forces to create a collection of royalty free, rights ready and rights managed photographs. This announcement is just the first step and there’s a lot to do before we launch. We’ve created a FAQ to address (http://www.flickr.com/help/gettyimages/)what we think will be the initial questions.

Not too many questions answered in that FAQ. I guess it's really time to start tagging those photos now.@:-)
