It's hard to tell ;), but that's Mt. McKinley (Denali) underneath the wingtip. And that, in an image, is why I like flying - it provides you a grand and unique view of the world on which we all live.
A perspective on the world that can be found nowhere else.
Awesome images, birdstrike and lalala!

Nice to know others share my preference for an unobstructed window seat. Often light conditions, weather or flight patterns prevent the ideal picture, but occasionally we get lucky.

Are there any other seats bar window seats?
*looks over at those in the middle rows* ... oh... those seats....
I must admit, if I'm flying, a window seat for me is a must normally... as is the camera in my lap.
Face it ... looking down the barrel of a single isle at the back of an A320 doesn't make for that many interesting pictures....

Hey, can anyone help me figure out how to add a link to my photo on a flickr page? I can see the page, but I cannot figure out how to post the image within this thread.
Thanks!
Hi ajax,
Here you go:
1. open your photo in flickr and then click "all sizes" (from selections just above the photo image)
2. on page that comes up, select the size image you want, scroll down to below the image and:
- hilight the URL of selection #2 ("grab photo's URL")
- right click on hilighted URL, then click Copy
3. go to your FT message and
- click on the "Insert Image" icon (the yellow square with the mountains and sun(?))
- paste copied URL into Explorer User prompt that comes up on the screen and then click OK
Voila! (hopefully ;) )
No, it's not intuitive; it took me quite a while (and some helpful advice) to figure this out.
I'm looking forward to seeing your photo!
Edited to describe more correct/better instructions, after the temporary senility faded away.

Thanks Jassy-50!
I somehow couldn't get it to work, but I posted the link nonetheless.
If you could maybe help once again, that'd be great!
I have also been fortunate to have some beautiful seaplane flights in the Pacific Northwest. The low altitude flights can score you some really unique views, like this approach into Lake Union in Seattle:
Also can't get it to work. I pasted the URL of the picture into the IMG button, but it just shows as a link.
ajax and bhd87:
You were pasting the URL of the web page, not the link. Step #2 of what Jassy posted is what you're doing wrong. Direct links to images on Flickr look something like this:
If you've grabbed the right link on the page, it will end in .jpg
Here's a cheat sheet for flickr URLs:
Address 1) http://www.flickr.com/photos/bdjohnson79/504932070/ is the main photo page for one of my images.
Address 2) http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=504932070&size=o is the page I get when I click on the "all sizes" button on page #1.
On that, if I scroll down below the image, there are two text boxes with automatically generated text. The first box contains some HTML code to automate putting it in webpages.
The second box, labeled "Grab the photo's URL" contains:
Technically, according to the Flickr rules, when you click on an image outside of Flickr, it's supposed to link back to the photo page (address #1). So, to do that here on FT, you do this (replacing ()'s with []'s)
(url=Address#1)(img)Address#3(/img)(/url)
And, if you're using Firefox as your web-browser with the Greasemonkey extension, you can install this script (http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/4771) to do it automatically - it'll add an extra textbox to the page with the right code for FlyerTak and other sites that use BBCode.

What do I love about flying? Our pilot navigated in extreme turbulence around all of these thunderheads to reach that small sliver of sunlight that you can see in the distance. It was, quite possibly, my most exciting flight.
These are all veeeery nice pictures. Just a short question though: What are the settings on your cam? I usually have quite problems with the pictures.
Apart from disabling the flash, what seetings do you recommend on the Digicam for such sharp and detailled pictures?
Thanks for tips

It *honestly* depends on the time of day and the position of the sun. A lot of the time, I wing it on auto (yes, I know, bad me slap hand)... but if i want control....
Bright Sky - ISO 100, f8-f13, Shutter at 1/200 or above (1/400 is normal)
Subduded light - ISO 400 f6.3 Shutter at 1/125 (compensating up or down)
Past Sunset - ISO as far as I can dare (1600), f4 or below (f1.8/f.28 is perferable to let as much light in as possible, risking shallow Depth of field), shutter at 1/100 or above (higher the better - remember, you're moving at considerable speed!)
Here is one I took on approch to LHR from BRU. Taken 22/06,
Lens: 17-40L (Canon), Body: Canon 20D, ISO 1600, f4, 1/60 (yes, I've broken my own rules - I was lucky), WB as Shot, Not toned, scaled to 1000 by whatever for Photoblog. Looking at it now, I think i could had got away with ISO800, and doubled my shutter speed (and halved my noise).... but i wasn't in the mood to chance it

Thanks. It was a beautiful summer's day in 2004 on a Kenya Airways flight from NBO-LHR. We went straight over southeastern France and the Cote D'Azur. I thought people said you could see the curvature of the earth when riding on the Concorde. It doesn't look to curvy to me.

From photos it is hard to see, but looking out the window (wider) you most certainly can see it. Sadly I was just using a P&S so didn't have anything with wide zoom.

Here's one I did on film that I scanned in. It was on arrival at ORD T5 in March this year....
For the DSLR users: are you using primes or zooms in an in-cabin situation? I have a Rebel XT with the 17-85IS, and I just can't picture having the room to operate it from a window seat.
Kevincm
Oct 22, 07, 7:08 pm
17-85 should cut it ... (I've done shots on a 20mm, 18-55mm, 17-40mm on a 300D and a 20D)
Manual foucusing is very important, as the first focal point will be the glass. You might want to shift to a single point focus or a multipoint depending on your style.
Wide as you can, experiment on manual settings though.
When are you trying to shoot... dawn, day or evening?

Shouldn't be a problem them. Set it to auto and review, then refine. You shouldn't need IS on unless you're flying very early/very late.
Or just point, shoot and if the person next to you asks... shush them and tell them you're writing a website with pretty pictures ;)

OK, it's more than one image, but I can't stop playing around with this Animoto (Beta) site. It takes a series of photos and creates a video with them, complete with some cool effects and music of your choice, and short ones (up to 30 seconds) are free.
Here's a very quick one that I did of some of the harbour floatplanes. You'll need some sound if you want to hear the music.
Also, there is a full-screen viewing option (mouse-over just under the images, and click on button to the right of the volume control), but the pics seems so pixelated. I hope they are working on improving that part.

I live in Alaska, so flying into and out of the state offers plenty of beautiful inflight vistas. The shot in this post was taken while descending over the Chugach Mountains during an approach into Anchorage International.
The picture in sbm12's post below (Thanks again for getting it to post!) was taken from a Singapore Airlines 747 enroute from Sydney to Singapore in 1987. It was originally shot as a slide, then digitalized twenty years later.

Turns out fotiki is harder than not as a hosting service, but your pictures are phenomenal, and I'm bored this morning, so I figured out how to do it. I've updated the instructions in the how-to thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=748616) as post #7 there. Here's an example using your first picture above:

This picture was taken back in the early eighties while flying aboard a United Airlines DC-8 between Hawaii and the West Coast. The DC8 was a wonderful aircraft to fly in, especially for its super large windows. Many people think this is an A340-500 but then where are the winglets?

This shot was taken one evening from a British Airways 747 cruising over the Java Sea enroute to Singapore. What I'd give for a totally clean window on this shot!
I know this isn't an inflight image of scenery, but boxo's dessert shot inspired me to include this. After all, scenarios like this are a huge part of why I like to fly. We're 20 minutes into a ten hour flight between London and San Francisco. A plate of canapes and a glass of cabernet have just been delivered. Seat reclined and feet up - now seems like a good time to peruse the menu for this afternoon's flight. Ah... the good life as experienced from a suite in the forward cabin of a 747.
For those of you who may be curious as to what's inside the menu, you'll find it and a full report on this flight RIGHT HERE (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3669528&postcount=5).

Taken from a sightseeing biplane flying over Sedona AZ. I've done this flight a few times as it's a great experience to fly open cockpit about 1000 feet off of the deck. The landings are also neat.
The other times I've done this flight is in November when I do some hiking in the region. Kind of neat to fly over some of the trails you're gonna hike as it adds to one's perspective.
This photo is from a May trip. Beautiful as usual, but this time of year, there's more thermals and the ride was a bit more bumpy than usual. My wife is along on this flight, and I could tell when she gets real quiet that she's fighting off motion sickness. I too get hit with a couple of waves of queeziness which makes me wish I did not eat that burrito an hour before. It's a happy ending as we both make it down without barfing, but I was clicking my heels like Dorothy thinking there's no place like home during the last 5 minutes of the flight.

I get asked all the time: "Why do you like to fly so much?"
I sometimes feel like a sage on a mountaintop with my simple response: "Look out the window."
This photo was taken while on final approach to Cordova, Alaska. Certainly one of the prettier approaches to be had in North America...
One last one I dug up - moving to the other side of the planet. This was taken while on final to Ushuaia, Argentina - the southernmost city in the world located at the very tip of South America on the Island of Tierra del Fuego.
Why do I love flying in a helicopter off the coast of Honolulu?
THis image answers that question:

I've had strikingly beautiful and breathtaking scenery in various forms that I would find difficult to get if it were not from high above and through an airplane window. ^ Some of the photos shared here are indeed great as well. ^

amazing thread..
Thought this would be an interesting topic. Why do you love flying? In one picture explain.
For me, it's this: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/197/483226557_fc3cf598ab.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ssegraves/483226557/)
makes me think of this, from bill whittle >
Off my left wing, between me and the mountains, moist air was being pushed up so fast that it was condensing, turning into cloud before my eyes. It was like an inverted waterfall of smoke, and there I was, dipping a wing into it...
And as I looked away from that upward rushing waterfall of air, I saw ahead of me another sight I had never seen before or since, for the sun was setting below a cloud layer, yet above a lower one, and there we were, just me and Apollo himself - caught in an envelope of purple and gold glory that would make the most heavenly Hallmark card look like something done on an Etch-A-Sketch.
i kind of wish i was better about taking pictures..

I'm always torn because I love the aisle seat but also occasionally want the views. Fortunately for that flight I was the only person in my row, and the sunset was at least a bulkhead, leaving me the flexibility I like for moving about ^

was there anything impressive in that meal? cant figure what? but at least it looks better than those served by US airlines.
From your question, I gather you've yet to fly in International First Class. I chose that picture not to highlight the particular food shown but rather because I thought it best captured the total ambience of a meal in International First Class. Check out all the space, the nice large table, the linen, the bottle of wine... If only there were real silverware...
As to the meal, you're looking at just the entree, a fairly simple filet. Not shown were the Champagne and canapes, the lobster appetizer, the soup and salad courses, the cheese service, the dessert and after dinner coffee and chocolates.

Good call on the ski runs, i love snowboarding !
I was flying ATL-SFO, and just happened to look out the window at the right time. Lo and behold, there was Angelfire ski resort, New Mexico. Luckily, the camera was very close ^
Shortly after take-off from Chicago O'Hare on a United Express flight down to Indianapolis. I snapped this out the window -- it took about 10 shots to finally get one that wasn't blurry. (After all, a little difficult to set up a tripod on a plane!) I love how it captures the expansiveness of Chicago and its suburbs -- quite a contrast to a lot of the great nature shots on here!

Why I Always Sit on the Starboard Side When Flying into SFO
When you are landing in the big planes, then they use the right side runway 28R, which is longer. Fully loaded 747 and 777s also use 28R for take off.
I love window seats too.

While flying from FRA to ORD on a 777 last December, I got to see this sight. This 747 was flying directly overhead so this picture was taken from the cockpit window (yes, I am a f/a).

Hartmann,
Thank you so much for this thread. I have been around FT a fair while now but had no idea of this forum/thread till cheepneezy posted about it here (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showpost.php?p=9700648&postcount=1288)
So firstly, congrats and thanks to all the posters and photographers. The photos are simply astoundingly beautiful.
I would love to make a couple of humble offerings from a time I got to sit in the right seat on a commercial flight from WEL to picton (yes it was post 9-11!).
I do not use flicker or any of the online photo posting sites. Can I just insert the image from my hard drive?

I do not use flicker or any of the online photo posting sites. Can I just insert the image from my hard drive?Your pictures have to be online in order to link to them. If you don't want to use any of the online hosting sites, you can set-up an album here on FT in the FT Photo Gallery (http://gallery.flyertalk.com/gallery/)and then link them into this thread. Instructions for linking from many different host sites are available in this sticky (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=748616).

With immense thanks to Scoow
Here are my humble offerings. All are taken from the right seat of a small Souonds Air flight between WEL and Picton (and return. The scenery flying over the Marlborough Sounds is exceptional and the excitement of landing on a small grass strip in Picton and in among the big birds at WEL all seen from the Right Seat (after 9-11 by the way) was almost too much for me.
I walked up to a DEN-SAF flight and said: "I want a window seat". The counter agent wrote out a boarding pass and didn't say a thing.
After I got on the plane then I realized every seat was a window seat save the middle seat in the last row. After we got up in the air, the co-pilot fetched us drinks.

Ahhh...the joys of the Beachcraft 1900. I had a flight ITH-PHL on that one time at night where they left the curtain open so we got a view out the front on approach into PHL. The runway lights and whatnot were quite fun to see.

Don't they usually say something like "unless you're enjoying the scenery"? I will fight tooth and nail to keep my shade open though, obviously, at the end of the day I will always obey a crewmember instruction.

They never gave us that option. I recall having it open while everyone closing it, making me pretty angry. At least I got to see this much which was awesome.

I took my wife and son with me a few weeks ago when I interpreted on a cruise out of Miami, we had problems getting out of MCI and were re-routed all over the map. On our last flight, into Miami, we were in this same plane and took up the back 3 seats. Before we took off, our 7 year old son said, " I dont think this kind of plane was made for kids!" They did leave the curtain open most of the time, which our son really liked. He also thought it was fun to fly around the afternoon Florida storms!
