Whoa...We can post photos in this forum? Cool.

Let me be the first to post a photo in the photography forum of a few cameras from my collection.

Nice one. Any guidelines on what size of photo we're allowed to post? I guess this puts Flyertalk in virgin territory.

And for something completely different, here is a photo of Lyttelton harbour from the top of Mt Cavendish, Christchurch, NZ.

Oh, and I can recommend the walk down from the cable car station to the habour.

Regards
I

I do not believe there is a limit. I've had to ask a few people to resize their pictures down when they have posted 1024x??? in the photo contest thread in Trip Reports.

Well, these two Leicas aren't in my collection, but I did make the one on the right. In all your travels have you ever seen a stone camera?

Is the only way to post images from a website????????????

No way of uploading them directly here?

I generally do not post images....had a problem with someone stealing them. I canceled my pBase acct.

No :(

Even if FlyerTalk were to host images, how would that make them less susceptible to theft than on PBase?

It wouldn't, but I would also not have tons of images posted on pBase.

Thanks for the answer.

There's always the big (c) watermark approach. At one of the photo forums I visit, there's one guy who actually manages to integrate a watermark into his shots so it's there, but not as obnoxious as as overlay.

I don't put anything much bigger than 800x or 1024x up unless its watermarked (and even then, I still do sometimes to reduce the likelihood of them being exploited further). At least at 800x600, they can't really make anything better than a mediocre 4x6 of it.

I have a lot of problems with my pix being lifted from my site and posted on Chinese websites, where they claim it to be their work. I'd been just putting a small copyright notice on the pix, but they ignore that.

So, what are some good watermark techniques/examples for smaller pix which don't completely trash the image or look too tacky?

What type of imaging or photo software do you use? There are techniques for adding watermarks in most of them. Here's a list of instructions for some of the major programs. (http://search.about.com/fullsearch.htm?terms=how%20to%20add%20a%20watermar k) You can create the type of watermark that suits you (and your images) best.

(I saw Photoshop Elements on sale for $50 a short while ago.)

You can "batch" process your images, but you might want to vary or customize watermark placement and appearance for different images.

There are programs like picture-shark - here is a sample image/watermark (http://www.picture-shark.com/samples.htm). I have never used it, but I think it's free.

Also, programs like PicScout can search for copies of your images, if you would like that kind of control. Details here (http://www.picscout.com/home/photographers.aspx?parent=9&id=47&type=10). Again, I have never used this application.

Dedicated people can remove a watermark from an image, of course, but it is a deterrent.

How do you find your pictures once they have been posted elsewhere? I can see using Google to find links to your site, but what if the images have been re-hosted?

Well, if you're working in photoshop, you can basically emboss a transparent text layer. If the embossing is subtle, it doesn't distract too much from the image, and you can do it large enough that it'll require a fair amount of time with the clone stamp to get rid of it, or else cropping.

If anyone's interested, I can write up how to record an action to automate it. It will be specific to Photoshop, though.

It's a bit slow and hit-or-miss, but it does always find some.

Thanks. Not much chance of my finding "Seagull on Rock" then. :D

The PicScout site I linked to above will actually search and report back on when your images are being used. As I said, I haven't used it, but if I had images that were important to retain some control over, I would certainly consider its Image Tracker service or something like it. It's not free, but depending on the value of your images, it may be well worth it.

Image Tracker is a service for anyone who is interested in monitoring the use of their images online. It identifies your images, wherever they are being used on commercial websites and then reports back to you about how and where they are being used.

Yeah, I do the same. Its quite easy in fact, just time consuming. I think there is some software out there I saw a while ago that does that. I know I used before Camtasia, and that allowed me for instance emboss a logo, like what they do on TV (Comedy central as an example) of my own logo on a video. Worked quite well
