I'm trying to find a good fare to go to Buenos Aires in December, but the prices are crazy right now. Continental has some ok fares (~$1500) non-stop from Houston, even though when you hit "view seats", the planes are empty! AA and UA are crazy, topping $2k for coach. I'm debating Mexicana and an 8 hour layover in Mexico City for $1k, but I'm not sure it's worth it with little kids.
December is high season, and if I can leave before Dec 13th and come back after January 17th then I can get better fares, but I can't exactly take 5 weeks off work.
But also I see that American has petitioned to have another flight out of ORD to EZE starting in October. Should I wait until that gets approved hoping more seats are released to cheaper fares due to the increased capacity?

EZE is just expensive to get to. Occasionally there will be fare sales from MIA or JFK, but not likely to be anything out of AUS, and definitely not during high season. About the only thing the ORD flight might do is make more award seats available, currently there's only 3 days with econ awards available in Dec!!

I'm willing to drive to IAH or DFW and take a flight from there. But AA wants $2,018 all in for DFW-EZE non-stop. CO wants $1,641 all in for IAH-EZE non-stop. With CO, it's a H fare, which they claim is BusinessFirst, but you only get to ride Economy (although you get 150% EQM, if that matters to you).
And both planes right now are basically empty. When you go to assign seats, only 5 seats are gone in the CO flight, and 3 in the AA flight.

Have you checked possible connections using Aerolineas? No FF miles... but pricing may be more attractive.

United currently has a sale on IAH to EZE (connecting in IAD) for appr. $800 all in. Departures are available through the first week in December.
Outbound availability seems good. Return availability in December is spotty.
More info on this can be found in the Mileage Run forum.

Yeah, I saw that. I can't find a return date until the third week of January. I'd love to spend a month and a half there, but I can't
Let's hope the price war continues! (c'mon CO, you pissed off UA by cutting price from SFO, cut from DFW to piss off AA!)
