I've never rented in Italy before. I use Hertz in the US and I have used Sixt in Germany and Spain. We are going to be in Italy for a week and may, and will need a rental. Any recommendations?

check autoeurope.com for prices. they are a broker. if you do not need the car right at the airport, wait until you get out of the airport to avoid a 10% tax.
appears you must have an international drivers something or other to rent in italy.
when comparing quotes, make certain everything is included. you must buy all inclusive insurance. if you can drive a stick it saves. consider a diesel, as the fuel is about 1/2 the price.
cars do not work well in big italian cities. cars are a must for italian countryside.
if anything, a compact is ever smaller in italy than other parts of europe.

Thanks. I've driven in Italy quite a bit (was born there and have vacationed there quite a bit) but this is the first time renting. What would be most helpful are specific recommendations re car company and/or experiences getting in and out of FCO.
thanks.
