 Mrs TOWT F and I will find ourselves in Rome and all points south to Salerno for 5 days this June with our son and his best friend. I'm thinking that Pompeii and Vesuvius should keep 'em interested for a day or 2 but hoped that someone could share some pearls of wisdom as to "appropriate" hotels and "activities" that will keep us a "happy" family whilst we are there! Us Grownups would like to see Amalfi and Capri if possible. Your thoughts on train vs car would also be appreciated. We arrive in FCO on June 15th and depart Rome(Civitavecchia actually..) on the 20th.

Are you going to Rome?? I'd think 15 year olds would enjoy the main sights (Colosseum, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's, etc.).

Pompeii -- I'd keep that to a day. :)

They should have no problem keeping themselves busy in the Amalfi area. They can rent a boat out of Positano and explore along the coastline a bit and swim. They'll also be able to get into a club in the evening to dance and listen to music, if they like. There's some hiking there too.

In Rome the Spanish Steps are a fun spot for young people to hang out at night.

Five days doesn't give you much time ... allow about 3-4 hours for Pompeii and do it on your way down or back from Salerno, depending on your flight schedule.

Our then 16-year old son (and 11-year old daughter) enjoyed the Roman Forum and the Colisseum across the road. He also enjojyed being served a beer (legally)!
