Is there any public transportation from the Hamburg Airport to downtown? (We're staying at the Marriott.) We arrive into Hamburg around 9:30PM and hope to get downtown for the night; we fly out the next morning around 11AM.
I checked the Hamburg Airport website and it says that the direct link won't be open until 2008. Until then there is a bus-to-U-Bahn connection, but didn't give any more details than that. Can anyone give us some direction here?
It looks like the closest U-Bahn station to the Marriott is Gansemarkt, although we could probably walk from S-Bahn station Jungfernstieg.

There´s a direct bus called Casper or Kasper to the railway station in the city. But in your case I´d take the city bus to the closest subway stop (a 5 minute ride from HAM) and take the u-bahn to Gänsemarkt. There should be plenty of people to ask which bus to take. I canno´t remember the number. It´s easy and cheap.

There is a direct and non-stop bus line to the Central Station. It leaves from just outside the terminal.
It taxes approx. 20 minutes, and leaves every 15 minutes, or so. I don't remember the exact price, but it's only a few Euro.

The busservice is called Jasper and charges 5 Euros, goes directly non stop to main station.

There are other combinations with going to Ohlsdorf S-Bahnstation, but you are best off with the Jasper.
IIRC the stop is between Terminal one and two outside and do not be alarmed: There is a second service going to somewhere else with Jasper - they are not leaving you behind, they just go somewhere else. ;)
I do not remember if they say main statoin on their sign, but if not, you want to look for Hauptbahnhof (HBF = main station).
At the main station you will have taxis you can take or if the Marriot is near some U/S-Bahn, HBF is the hub.
Although it takes only about 15 minutes to get to the airport, it may be better to give some time in the morning due to traffic.
You can use maps.google.de for checking out everything around that.
Although German,
http://www.hvv.de/fahrplaene-strecken/streckennetzplaene/index.html
has the line map of hamburg which correspondents with google maps naming.

Price is 5,00€ oneway or 8,00€ roundtrip.
Remember that this is a special service:
- no stops on the way between airport and central station
- the tickets are only valid on this airport-line. For all other metro-, bus- oder shiplines you have to buy a new ticket or a day-ticket.
so for any other trips to the city:
Bus 110 to Ohlsdorf Station - then
Train U1 or S1 or S11 to the City.
Oneway-fare is 2,50€, day-ticket is 4,90€

Yeah, but probably stairs, no rollways?
And waiting two times and orientating two times ..
Compared to that pricing isn't that bad (forgot about the return ticket)
If you go back the next morning anyhow, that is a good way to go.

It is not a pricing issue but a question where you want to go in Hamburg. I you need to go to or close to Central station, take Jasper, if you need to go somewhere else take the bus to "Olsdorfer Friedhof" and continue with U-Bahn or S-Bahn.

I never used Casper, only the bus to metro and this works fine for me.

Yes, I always stay at the IC and the connection therefore is quite good, because a bus stop is in front of the hotel.

But it sounds like the Jasper bus (drops off at HBF) does not let us off near the Marriott. Is the Marriott within walking distance (<15 min) from the HBF?

Which is why I gave you the maps link.
Enter both Addresses (Hauptbahnhof and the one of your Marriott) and you should get a driving distance.
This helps you determine price for the cab or walking distance.

If you´re travelling with small luggage and get yourself a map (tourist information in the central station) the downtown marriott is in walking distance.
A cabride from central station should cost ~8-10 Euro, depending on traffic.

Here is ViaMichelin's map and route (I used the address of the neighboring InterCity Hotel as the starting point, since the mapping services didn't seem to recognize "Hauptbahnhof" or "Main Train Station"):
(You can click on the small map for a larger view).
As you will note, the distance is charted at 1.7 km, which comes out to 1.06 miles. If the weather is good, it can be quite a pleasant walk.
If you'd rather connect to save the walk, merely make your way from the Jasper bus drop-off point (outside, in the back of the Hbf) to the Hauptbahnhof Nord station (NOT the Hauptbahnhof Sud station), and take line U2 to the next stop, which is called Gaesenmarkt (Oper).
When you come to the surface, you will see a brick open plaza, with a McDonalds on one side, across a narrow street. The Marriott is behind the building housing the McDonalds (bear to the left).

FYI - Although the HVV website English-language pages are still under construction, they do have a English-language route finder which is actually a good stop-gap until the full English site is completed:
We got the 110 bus (Airport Express) just outside the terminal doors which tooks us to Ohlsdorf where we caught the S-bahn down to the HBF. Everything was easily accessible from there. Otherwise, we could take the S-bahn one more stop which is closer to the Marriott.
