I have stayed at the Sheraton at the FRA airport three times, every stay was acceptable, very nice staff. Not a spectacular luxury hotel, but as far as airport hotels go it is very nice. It's also a great location for a day use if you have a long layover in Frankfurt.

Sheraton is the best and closest alternative if you are looking for a hotel at FRA. Only problem with the Sheraton is that it is usually pretty pricey! There is also a decent Holiday Inn not too far from the airport which a co-worker uses frequently. Rates at the HI are usually half that of the Sheraton.

Another option is any one of the hotels right outside the Hauptbahnhof...just a 15 min. train ride to/from FRA. The Intercity comes to mind; a comfortable enough room and free subway/bus/strassenbahn pass included, and the price is fairly cheap.

I agree here. If your flight does not depart too early why not take a hotel downtown. Prices will be cheaper, there are more alternatives and you can stroll through Frankfurt for a while.

Tourist information (most big cities in Germany do have english versions)
the intercontinental group (ihg.com) has some properties around the airport as well, sometimes quite cheap.

What about the Pure? I haven't gotten to stay there yet, but it sure looks cool. I have heard mixed things about it, but people tend to be polarized on design hotels. Personally, I generally love them.

I just got back yesterday from a weekend in Frankfurt (http://www.helium.com/tm/185441), and I stayed at Hotel Niederräder Hof on Triftstraße. It's down the street 2-3 tram stops (tram line 12) from the Niederrad Bahnhof/train station, which is 2 stops (on the S8/S9) from the Flughafen/Airport. Ticket's EUR3-4 each way.
It's nothing tremendously special. Mid-20th-century construction, with rooms that have been renovated nicely enough. There's WiFi to be had, though unfortunately my laptop's WiFi isn't working right now. Breakfast was tasty but unspectacular.
So why would I even mention it? Well, I paid EUR55 a night for a single through booking.com, which was about the most reasonable price I could find in the area. It may be a good option for folks who're looking for that sort of price range.

Another option, if you want to try a really interesting, trendy hotel, try the Radisson SAS.

I stayed here one night, and it is a place to remember, to say the least. It is pricey, to be sure, but the views from the high floors are spectacular and the hotel itself is very comfortable. You would be staying in an architectural wonder.
It is about a ten minute walk from the Frankfurt Westbahnhof, if memory serves.
