Hi,
Does anyone know where to get train times and routes for Italy online?
Also, Is there any way to book Italy train travel while still in the states?
I'm planning on flying into Milan, going to Florence, then on to Naples and flying out from there. I'd love it if I could get that all arranged now instead of waiting in line at the train station wasting my limited vacation time.
Thanks much
The Trenitalia (http://www.trenitalia.it/en/index.html)website should have the info. you need.
Also, take a look at previous threads on this topic (listed at bottom of this page).

In addition to the Trenitalia site mentioned in the preceeding post, most of the guide books will give you a decoding of the types of trains: IC, IR, and so forth.
Overall, the Italy train service is very very good and reasonably priced. Multiple trains every day to all major destinations. Transfer at the major stations to the locals to get to the smaller cities.
Multi-language kiosk's in most larger train stations will sell you a ticket on the spot (euros or credit card) for whichever train you want so often advance reservations are not needed. There is rarely a line for these. Watch out for Italian holidays as that's the only time I found I couldn't get on a train and did need the reservation.
Each station is good about having timetables posted, listing the station and the major destination of the train and then all the stops in between. Give yourself a day to get the hang of it and then there's no worries (other than the occasional strike).
Oh, and don't forget to punch your ticket in the yellow boxes before you get on the train!

If you want to ride the Eurostar, you need a reservation. There is no need to validate Eurostar tickets.
