I have a family of three taking a cruise from civitavecchia italy in early sept 2007. the cruise line charges 86 dollars per person for one way transfer aboard a bus to the cruise port. Anyone have any experience using a train or cab or shuttle bus? The cruise line will charge the 3 of us about $238. I could take the train if it goes right form airport to cruise port with few or no transfers required...
Thanks!

You can take the train from FCO to Civitavecchia, but you'll have to change trains in Rome. The trip is between 1.5-2 hours total, depending on the connection time. I think the fare is around €10 each way, maybe a little more now since the last time I looked into it was a few years ago. The big advantage of the train is the ability to avoid traffic, which can be very bad during rush hour.

Thanks, Good info on the train. Any guess how much a cab might cost? Any shuttle/limo services that we could reserve in advance?
Thanks!

Try a search on cruisecritic, cruisemates, or tripadvisor - or even google. I did a quick scan of some posts and saw cab about $200 Eu, shuttles at $120 Eu - The train is the cheapest, but since the airport is north and on a different train, you go into Rome and then back north - to get to pier.

I've used them for city/airport transfers; you can book in advance online. Looks like the Civitavecchia-Rome shuttle is 130 euros for three people, which is more than the train (but less than what the cruise line charges), but it's door to door.

The train station in Civitavecchia is quite a ways from the port terminal. You'd need a taxi on that little stretch alone if you're lugging some bags with you.

I can't tell from their website, are these airport rides into Rome in a private car? or a minivan? And when it differentiates some packages as including a "personal welcome," does that mean someone will be holding a sign with my name?
Thanks!

I used Airport Shuttle (www.airports-shuttle.com) last time and they offered a good service for a reasonable price. You may what to have a look on thier website as well. They are pretty fast with a reply per email if you have any questions.

We are also looking for transfers to and from FCO to Carnival ship Freedom. We are going July 12 - July 24, I don't want to spend a fortune but wonder how big the hassle is by train? We used the Rome train before to a hotel, it was horrible! Anyone know what that trip consists of and what is the Roll Call others have mentioned?

Welcome to FT!
No offense, but if you thought the train from FCO to a hotel was horrible, you probably shouldn't attempt to get from FCO to Civitavecchia by public transportation. It's definitely do-able, but it involves a change of trains and a bit of a walk to the port. The walk isn't far, but if you have a lot of luggage, it could be more convenient to hop in a taxi from the train station to the port.
