I am looking at going to the falls in early January, however someone told me that they don't flow much that time of year.

They didn't sound very confident in their remarks and I find this hard to believe.

Anyone else know anything about this?

It depends on what the water situation is like in Brazil.... if they are having less than average water, the falls will have less water getting to them. Its hard to predict with a high degree of certainty what things will be like....

I went there as a kid during January. It was unbearabley hot/humid and there was no flow at all, went there September 05 as well, the weather was great warm but not hot, and the falls were spectacular and in full flow.

Went there in January 2002. Falls were flowing just fine.

Think high 30's and 200% humidity;)

I was there the week of Thanksgiving in late November and the falls were spectacular.

Have you been to Niagra...? If so, how did Iguazu match in comparison, according to your experience?

Sorry, despite living (at one time) a few hours from Niagara, I've never been.

Things will definately be very, very warm down there. Presently Ciudad de Este is hovering around 40-45 C....with obscene humidity. However, having said that, I was there Nov. 20, and things were flowing nicely. As far as a comparison to Niagra, there is no comparison. Iguazo may only be reveled by Victoria Falls. Be sure to take a tour of Itaipu.....very impressive structure.

My perspective is a little warped because I have only visited Niagara at night, but not sure you can really compare the virgin jungle ecosystem surroundings of Iguazu with the bright lights and tackiness of Niagara Falls! I want to describe the experience with Iguazu as more personal -- i.e. on the Brazil side you have this theater in the round effect and on the Argentina side you can walk the boardwalks and hike all around. Whereas my Niagara experience was really cool too - showed up in the middle of the summer to fireworks going off, and I love the way they light up the falls at night - but it was definitely more of a show experience vs. getting back to nature.

I want to say I was more impressed with the amount of water/power at Niagara, but it is also the one I have visited more recently. I also love tacky places, so I would definitely go back to Niagara Falls, whereas I feel like I have seen Iguazu.
