this is probablay a long-shot, but we are looking for some very early morning (5am?) kid-friendly activities near faneuil hall. could involve traveling, as long as it is safe for a family. are there fisherman at the wharf to see? the markets being filled with veggies? anything besides hotel cable? PS--how safe is that area at night, in general? thanks!!

Haymarket Square has a fruit/vegetable market that was mostly a morning market, but I don;t know if they set up at 5 am. I know it would end in the afternoon, but it is open only on Frday and Saturday. It is fairly bustling when in full swing as a traditional open air market. http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/North_America/United_States_of_America/Massachusetts/Boston-794476/Shopping-Boston-Haymarket-BR-1.html

Not sure of much else going on. You could always take a walk through the North End to see the architecture and watch the unique neighborhood greet the day and then walk back along the waterfront, but at 5 am, not sure too much will be happening.

As for being safe, I would feel safe walking around that entire area. I think the worst that would happen would be that there might be an occasional drunk driver on the road or sleeping in some alley, but at 5 am, likely they'll be sleeping it off somewhere warmer. ;)

Here is a map of the Fanieul Hall area http://www.ci.boston.ma.us/bra/pdf/maps/governmentcenter.pdf
