Hi Gang.

I am heading to Phuket for X-Mas and New Years and i was thinking to head up to Khao Lak for a few days in between. I know its abit lit to plan these things but oh well...

Anybody got a recommendation for a nice hotel near the beach? Is it still really creepy of there since Tsunami?

I am really quite interested in getting away from the throngs of Patong/Kata/Karon.

Khao Lak is largely rebuilt. You have to know where to look to find traces of the tsunami.

Many of the small bungalow owners struggled to find financing to get back on their feet. Why don't you support them by staying in their accomodation? Here's the website (http://www.khaolak.de/khaolakbeach/home.htm) of a small bungalow owner on Bang Niang Beach, who takes bookings for many of the places in the vicinity.

If only a larger hotel will meet your needs, here's a listing of many of them (http://www.khaolaklovers.com/).

I've stayed at the Meridien. It was rebuilt not long after the tsunami and is really very beautiful. It's still offering reduced rates.

... and here's a link to another site showing hotels etc in Khao Lak. In German but if you want info or to book, use the links and you will get a response in English.

Khao Lak is full of resorts set right on the beach - hotels and bungalows. You will be spoiled for choices.

Some favorites are the Ayara on Bang Niang Beach - and the Baan Khao Lak on Nang Thong Beach. May other options also at: Khao Lak Lovers (http://khaolaklovers.com)

Just returned last month from my fourth trip to Thailand/Phuket and went to Khao Lak for this stay and enjoyed it very much. Stayed at the LeMeridien using Starwood points and loved the place. However, if I were paying I would certainly check out the place nearby called Similana. Although Khao Lak is about 65 miles north of Phuket it was only a 1200baht meter tax ride over a very nice road from the airport. There's very little evidence of the tsunami unless you count a fair amount of new construction. The LeMeridien must have taken a major hit but there's no evidence of it at all. I found Khao Lak to be much greener and more jungly than Phuket island. Hope to go back soon.
