Hi,
We are planning a trip to Germany from Dallas in May 2007 but want to make a stopover in London either on the way in or way out. Any suggestions to which airlines would be the most economical to do this.
AA has fares for a direct flight about $800. if I try BA, it goes to about $1400.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Fly direct to Germany and make a side trip via a LCC unless you particularily like enriching th UK treasury with taxes.

It's a little more complicated than that. Air Passenger Duty in UK is levied on each flight at different rates dependent on EU / non-EU destinations.
For sure, stopovers on legacy carriers are expensive so you should fly one transatlantic leg only. Europe abounds with LCCs at good prices providing you book ahead and avoid peak periods if possible. The best guide to LCC carriers and peak periods is on Skyscanner (http://www.skyscanner.net/) where you can view prices for routes by period
Here's the latest on Air Passenger Duty (http://business.guardian.co.uk/prebudgetreport2006/story/0,,1965401,00.html) in UK which was just increased. BTW legacy carriers often bundle govt taxes and charges in the fare unless you know how to decode them in the ticket price - a whole other subject!
