Hello Singapore folks.

I'll be moving to SIN in January- currently living in GVA - for work.

BTW, I already pre-registered for the SIN RUN of course :)

I'd like to have some inputs from local experts. Where are the best places to life? I'm young, and probably looking for a cheap room, or even a flat-sharing community. Idealy, my room would be located near a party-neighbourhood, I mean not too far away from clubs, bars etc.
I'll be working on the Temasek Blvd, so ideally my location shouldn't be too far away from this place as well.

I saw some room mate internet sites, pricing rooms for approx 500 SGD. Idealy my room should not cost more than 650 SGD per month.

Can anybody give me some ideas, internet sites, hints etc?

Thank you for your inputs, and see you on the Sin Run DO!

Another Singapore expat website you can look at: http://www.expatsingapore.com/

If you have any other questions you can't find answers to in these websites, feel free to post them here.

I lived over five years as an expat in Singapore and think you will have a great time. Good luck!

thank you so far!
I found some rooms on the websites above. However, I'd rather not make a final decision from here. I prefere to see them "live" before I rent them, in order to avoid bad surprises.
So my idea is the following: Arriving in SIN arround Jan-07. Staying in a youth hostel for let's say, a week until I found a room somewhere in the city. I have no idea on how the room-sharing process are managed in SIN. Is it possible to get a room within one week?

What do you think about that? Any particular youth hostel to avoid, to recommend?

Try Craigslist? http://singapore.craigslist.org/roo/

Craigslist is not big in Singapore. I've used http://sg.easyroommate.com with success in the past. You can search by area.

Youth Hostels? I don't know any apart from the YMCA (http://www.ymcaih.com.sg/index.htm) which is quite upscale...in fact, the Hotel 81 chain is cheaper.

The SingaporeExpats classifieds are probably the most popular place to hunt for rooms:

Singapore - my former home...

For fun areas - Holland Village. Not Dutch by any means, but there are many places where one dines, and not necessarily parties...but because it's where most foreginers hang out - there is a nice feel to it. Many places to eat cheaply, and there are several supermarkets in area.

Closest MRT station is Buona Vista station.

Other areas which are nice - and reasonable are : Siglap, Newton, Novena. A friend of mine, British, lives in Newton area, pays for around S$2K for an apartment, and all the facilities (supermarket, gym, shops) are there. It is not a party area.. but as Singapore is so small anyway, everywhere is within reach by taxi.

Have lotsa fun!
