I've been there several times. What's your budget? Do you want to stay in the city or out in the countryside? There are lots of choices in Chiang Mai.
You might start by looking at the numerous posts here by allthai, he is a Chiang Mai resident.

Look at the thread "Advise for visitors to Chiang Mai Thailand" here at flyer talk Thailand Forum. I have put lots of useful information here along with links to my streaming videos.

Good possibility that we will be spending the New Year's eve and the following day in Chiang mai. I was in Ching Mai last December and loved it, especially the night market area. Did get to visit several of the popular spots and even made to Ching Rai and the Golden Triangle. This time we will only have 3 days and will be a group of six (other 4 have not been to Chinag Mai before) so we will do things that are prmiarily local.
NOT sure what to expect in terms if New Year's related activites. We are looking for something casual and at this point, are thinkng about just going down to the night market. What are some of the other casual options for New Years eve in Chiang Mai?

Since the 31st is on a Sunday you should visit the Sunday market on Rachadamnerng Road from Tapae gate to Wat Prasing temple. Lots of activities planned at Thapae Gate and in the middle of the Sunday Market at the 3 Kings statue and city arts and culture museum.
Enjoy,

great. Thanks.
What time would be a good time to go there?
Also, my older brother has a bad leg and can nto walk too much. Is there a good stop to get our driver to drop us so that he is near the action and whre we can sit down and have dinner while waiting for the action to start?
Looking forward to our return tip to chinag Mai. ^

There is a Starbucks, a Thai Restaurant and a another restaurant at the Montree hotel on the corner of Moonmuang and Rachadamnerng road at Thapae Gate.
